From Overwhelming to Empowering: Rethinking Tech in the Classroom
Technology in the classroom is like spotting a shooting star: you get excited, make a wish, only to realize it’s just a helicopter!
Too often, teachers place all their hopes in technology, only for plans to go awry. Yet, technology is an integral part of our world and, therefore, a vital part of education. Incorporating it thoughtfully is key to boosting student engagement and preparing learners for a lifetime of using digital tools (Couros, 2015).
While writing this plan, I kept asking myself, “How can I make this easier for teachers?” My sincere goal is to help lighten the load of traditional teaching while making learning more engaging and effective for students.
For my practicum this semester, I’ve been working with teachers at a Title I elementary school that emphasizes STEAM and innovative practices both in and out of the classroom. While teachers recognize the value of professional development, they often find the training difficult to implement due to the added workload. Additionally, while students in grades 3–5 receive adequate exposure to technology, there is a noticeable gap in integration within the primary grades (K–2).
Nearpod is an interactive classroom tool that enhances engagement by allowing teachers to deliver lessons with multimedia content, quizzes, polls, and activities like virtual field trips or drawing responses. It supports both live and student-paced learning, offers real-time formative assessment, and integrates with platforms like Google Classroom and Canvas to streamline instruction and differentiation. Adding this technology to any classroom would be an asset, as it gets students engaged and learning while also lightening teachers' workload.
Primary goals of the technology plan:
Enhancing Nearpod Proficiency in Employee Usage
Employee Nearpod Implementation in Classroom Setting via Lesson Plans
Building Employee Confidence in Nearpod Technology Usage
Strengthening Collaboration in Professional Learning Community (PLCs) through Nearpod Technology Usage
Evaluating Student Engagement Impact through Nearpod Technology Usage
Each activity within the technology plan is scaffolded to build confidence and prepare teachers to independently implement the lesson plan, integrating Nearpod. Nearpod and the Google Platform were chosen as technology tools for their user friendliness and cloud-based accessibility, enabling learners to view, create, and apply strategies to future lesson plans.
Teachers in this setting thrive in learner-centered activities, including interaction time with Nearpod and many opportunities for collaboration. These opportunities consist of in-person training and Professional Learning Community (PLCs) meetings, where learners will develop and analyze data from Nearpod-integrated lesson plans. Structured support ensures teachers can effectively use Nearpod, adapt lessons based on feedback, and refine instructional strategies.
Technology holds immense potential when used with intention and the right support. When seen not as a magical fix but as a practical tool, it can help educators build user-friendly, engaging classrooms that prepare students for the digital world, while also easing the workload for teachers.
As highlighted in Derek Sivers’ “Obvious to You. Amazing to Others,” what feels simple or second nature to one person can be incredibly valuable to someone else (Sivers, 2011). By collaborating to share practical, accessible strategies for integrating technology, we can groupthink within teams to make teaching easier and more impactful for everyone involved.
