The best method to explore and model new learning moments is by seeing a need through learning gaps and finding innovative ways to bridge them. By taking my given curriculum and innovating, I allow myself to fill learning gaps by trying something new. Thus, my students also get fresh experiences as well.
For example, I have traditionally taught instrument families and musical timbre through music listening, adhering to the listen-and-analyze methodology as outlined in my curriculum. It wasn’t until I remembered DAW (digital audio workstation) software. I then had the idea of implementing DAW software to enhance student engagement. By incorporating hands-on experiences with DAW software, students gain a deeper understanding of instrument families and timbre through active exploration and application.
Having hands-on software that provides content and play is a perfect way to enhance informational learning. For example, QGrooves is a DAW software through Quaver Music that enables students to incorporate different loops to create their own piece of music. Users can customize the genre, key, tempo, and instrumentation of their created song.
By combining information from the unit with technology exploration, the students can interact with the technology in a play-like setting that allows them to be creative while meeting standards. It’s amazing to see the songs they come up with; they are so knowledgeable while also so creative. Exactly the way music teaching should be!
The move of technology use from standardization to personalization is pivotal to instructional progress and student development. In The Innovator's Mindset’s chapter on Powerful Learning and Powerful Leadership, Couros (2015) states “We try to use technology to frame our teaching when we should be trying to understand the opportunities it can provide for each individual” (p. 142). As I was reading the chapter, this quote stuck with me when planning my next units.
For my 5th graders, there’s a commercial project we do every final quarter of the year. While the project has always allowed for creativity, I am now transforming its use of technology from simply meeting standards to fostering personalization. By developing a viable product, crafting a slogan, and creating a theme song, students have the opportunity to let their creativity shine while also demonstrating informed musicianship in their learning. A new addition to the project this year is incorporating video filming. This gives students the freedom to express their voices through a different medium of technology.
The deeper technology is integrated into the classroom, the less it becomes just a supplement to meet standards, and the more it becomes a personalized, opportunity-driven environment.
