I am Jyotirmoy Roy, a fourth-year PhD candidate in Prof. Lonnie Shea’s lab in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. My research lies at the intersection of biomaterials, immunology, and bioinformatics, with a focus on developing biomaterial-based platforms that can capture immune cells and establish synthetic immunological niches. By applying deep immunophenotyping and multi-omics profiling to these niches, I aim to uncover immune dysregulations associated with the onset of autoimmune Type 1 Diabetes and outcomes in islet transplantation.
Prior to my Ph.D., I earned a B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering with a Minor in Biology from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. As an undergraduate researcher in Prof. Sanjeeva Srivastava’s Proteomics Lab, I worked on developing proteomic biomarkers linked to COVID-19 severity. I also spent time as a research intern at Purdue University in Prof. Doraiswami Ramkrishna’s group, where I developed an epidemiological model to analyze the spread of COVID-19 across age groups and to identify optimal vaccination strategies for reducing disease burden.
Beyond research, I enjoy hiking and running in and around Ann Arbor, as well as painting on weekends. I love to cook and experiment with new cuisines, and I’m passionate about traveling, whether it’s to a scenic beach, mountain trail, museum, or a new restaurant.
I am fortunate to have been associated with the following prestigious academic institutes in during my research career
