We strongly urge motorists to avoid the following while driving: eating or drinking, talking to passengers, self-grooming, applying makeup, using a navigation device and adjusting the radio or climate controls. Using your cell phone while driving is not only dangerous, but also illegal. In California, you cannot use a cell phone or similar electronic communication device while holding it in your hand. You can only use it in a hands-free manner, such as speaker phone or voice commands, but never while holding it. Any driver under the age of 18 is prohibited from using a cell phone for any reason.

MEQUON  For the last 10 years, Mequon residents Larry and Debra Newell have operated Just drive, a business that offers driver education courses. Primarily, teenagers comprise the majority of students, but they offer classes and driving lessons to people of all ages. The couple began looking at the business for several reasons. Larry Newell had been the parent to stay at home with their children. As those children approached driving age, Newell was ready to reenter the work force. A franchise was their first choice. "We wanted to choose something recession-proof, since we were in a recession then," said Larry Newell. "At the same time, we were thinking about driving lessons for our children. There was only one option in the area." Debra Newell had gone to high school with the founder of Just Drive in Port Washington. It was founded in 2005 and today, the franchise operates driver's education training in 35 cities/school districts in Wisconsin. "We launched a direct mail campaign," said Debra Newell, "and began visiting schools. There had been a business offering driver education out of Homestead High School and they opted to leave, which meant there was a tremendous need for training  and that also meant we had a wonderful opportunity in front of us." Driver's Ed consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction in addition to behind-the-wheel driving lessons. Students must clock time as observers during driving lessons as well. Larry Newell taught his first group of 12 students in February 2008. "I still remember every one of them," he said. "They were great kids. They made me a 'Larry Star' in place of an OnStar button they'd touch with questions." Newell still sees that group, and has now taught almost 4,000 young people in the Mequon-Thiensville School District. Other clients include seniors looking for refresher courses and hospital-referred rehabilitation patients. "For them," he said, "it's usually just an evaluation session. Our eldest student was 92." Larry Newell was the only instructor when the business opened, and was soon overwhelmed. He has added four state-certified instructors. They take students out driving daily after school at Homestead, in addition to classroom instruction and private lessons. There is no down time. Three classroom sessions are offered in the spring. During the summer, seven to eight classroom sessions are taught, with two more in the fall. Larry Newell said he feels lucky to have established himself in a career where he makes a difference. "Larry's students adore him," said Debra Newell. "They call from the DMV to tell him they passed their test and they remember him years later when they run into him." "This is a point in a teenager's life they look forward to, to finally taking Driver's Ed," she said. "They're all happy to be there." Kate Tuttle of Mequon has sent five children through Just Drive. "The kids love him," she said. "He is fun and funny but teaches them what they need to learn to be good drivers. He is accommodating with the kids getting their hours in, adding hours to his schedule in the summer, and is great with parents. I think that's pretty unique." Lisa Nelson is another enthusiastic parent. She enrolled all four of her children in Just Drive. She pointed out that all the kids felt safe when learning to drive, and that in addition to his expertise, he is patient, kind and caring. "Larry is an impressive role model and mentor for his students," she added. "He is the kind of person that parents want their children to be around, because he teaches them important life lessons. Our family really appreciated having the opportunity to work with Larry." Surely there had been scary moments. Newell said the most nerve-wracking one was also funny. "I had a student become tired of driving in a straight line during his first lesson. So he turned toward the ditch."
