Hey y'all. It’s ya gurl, Deborah! I’m here with Raichi Nunez, who is a sophomore at MVA, to help start off my interview series called, Searchin' for the Scoop w/ the Sophomores! In order for y'all to get a better understanding of Raichi, I got up close and personal in her MVA life since school is what takes up most of our time.

Q: What clubs are you a part of?

Raichi: I’m part of Model UN and Student Council.

Yes. We are here with our 10th-grade senator, way to represent!

Q: Do you have any significant roles in those clubs, if so what are your roles and the duties that go along with them?

Raichi: In model UN I’m the secretary, the club just started, so my role isn’t big. Normally, my role would be to keep up with everything that’s going on in each session. I would also take notes and write things for the club. As a 10th-grade senator listens to what people are saying to me and trying to make improvements. I bring up issues like homework complaints to the principal, Ms. White and she’s been very receptive and helpful!

Q: I don’t know if you read that MVA Times Article, MVA Clubs Arise, which is about a theory on why a large number of clubs came into existence this remote school year compared to any other year, what is your hot take on all the new clubs in general?

Raichi: Think it’s really fun and cool because before we didn’t have clubs last year, but only sports teams. I think it’s really cool and fascinating that people are taking the course of action this year to make these clubs. Especially now that we are remote, we have more time on our hands. We can devote more time to things that we are passionate about and it will benefit us in the future.

Q: How do you think all these new clubs are affecting students?

Raichi: I think it’s a positive thing because it gives me a chance to interact with other people. Like we’re being productive instead of texting and being on facetime. It’s really beneficial, when we are in school we didn’t really talk to each other, but now we can.

That is true, I didn’t vibe with half of the people I talk to now. It personally allows me to be more open to who I decide to socialize with.

Q: How has the MVA experience changed since we’ve shifted to remote-learning?

Raichi: Negatively a lot, because it’s [MVA] a small school and everyone didn’t really talk to each other, and we all went into our own little friend groups. I had a small group of friends and once we went remote we weren’t as close or communicating. So things like clubs helped us communicate more in class, but sometimes not at all. It honestly really depends on the person.

Heavy! I haven’t talked to some of my friends in months, but as I start to see them in classes and clubs I can rebuild our communication.

Q: How do you think the teachers at MVA could make your learning experience better and effective?

Raichi: I think ELA is a really good example of a class I’m able to talk a lot in. I can talk to my peers more often and talk about new ideas and other things in general. And other teachers should take that into account and allow us to talk a little bit more in class. They should allow us to be more engaged and communicate with one another a bit more. Ms.Wheeler, the ELA teacher, does a very good job of making me feel comfortable speaking in her class and other teachers should try to do that too!

I agree, I hate being the only one talking, and kind of urging students to talk a bit more would be more helpful!

Q: Do you have any advice for freshmen or transfer students who are going to MVA for the first time, but are remote?

Raichi: Procrastination is really a big thing, so turn off my phone or put on do not disturb when trying to complete assignments. I noticed I finish my homework faster when my phone is off. Also listening to some music. Socialization wise, don’t be afraid to talk to others. You should go into chat and ask for people’s Snap or IG because it’s a small school and no one would really mind if you ask.

Be bold and ask for y'all peers’ socials and mingle!

Q: Anything else you would like to talk about or make aware to the MVA community?

Raichi: Maybe communication. Even though we are at home we should communicate with one another. Like I’ve been saying this entire interview, I feel like we should talk to each other more. We don’t know when we’ll get out of this situation, so choosing to not speak to each other can make it harder to communicate down the line.
