Hey y'all. It’s Deborah back at it again with another interview! I’m here with Jaylene, who is a Senior at MVA, to help start my interview series called, Stayin’ Studious w/ the Seniors! Today’s questions are going to focus on her experience at MVA and her future plans for once she leaves MVA!

Q: What clubs were you a part of?

Jaylene: I was part of the band in freshman year and in sophomore, and junior year I was on the cheerleading team. My advice is to take advantage of it, and I'm a senior, and I wish I took advantage of it. Once you get older you'll have less time to be a part of clubs.

Q: I don’t know if you read that MVA Times Article, MVA Clubs Arise, which is about a theory on why a large number of clubs came into existence this remote school year compared to any other year, what is your hot take on all the new clubs in general?

Jaylene: I think it’s really good. When I was a freshman and sophomore there were not that many clubs. To whoever made the clubs, good job and I support y'all. It’s really good and it helps with college applications. I still had stuff to write down because I had other programs, but I had some friends who had nothing to write.

Q: Looking back to your Freshman to Junior year here at MVA what were some of your favorite memories?

Jaylene: I think just hanging out with my friends in general. I used to hate staying after school, but it was actually kind of fun. You'll just be hanging out with your friends and the building will be kind of empty. I don't know if you got to experience on Thanksgiving, we would have a feast and those were some of my favorite moments.

Q: How has the MVA experience been for you since we are remote?

Jaylene: Not gonna lie it’s been hard, especially as a senior. MVA is known to be challenging and pushing their students, so under these circumstances, it would be a little bit harder. But obviously, I go through it and you can get through it as well.

Q: If you had to change one thing about your academic or social life at MVA what would it be?

Jaylene: It probably is to enjoy my high school more. Like after school I want to go straight home, so I would try to join that club or like stay for extra help. I should have taken advantage of that more, because now under these circumstances I can't do it anymore.

Q: Can you describe the college application process for us?

Jaylene: I'll explain my college experience because everyone does it differently. So for me, I started to speak to Ms. Nappy, our college counselor, before my junior year. So around June of my sophomore year, I started speaking to her so if I needed anything or needed help, I'll feel comfortable around her. She recommended me to ask for recommendations and then by the end of the summer I was able to finish my personal statements, which not a lot of people do. I applied to a lot of schools earlier and Ms. Nappy was a lot of help. I would advise you guys to ask for help because she's always there and that's her job. She's a really nice college counselor. I still text her when I need help, so my advice is to start earlier, start creating lists, brainstorm, and plan things out.

Q: Do you have any advice for any freshman or transfer students who are here at MVA for the first time?

Jaylene: Don't be afraid to ask for help. I know being an MVA student is hard, so email that teacher if you need an extra day to finish that assignment. Don't be afraid to email that teacher that you're struggling and that you need extra time.

Q: Anything else you would like to talk about or make aware to the MVA community?

Jaylene: I want to let them know that their hard work pays off. MVA prepares you for college with all those essays and AP classes. They really prepare you, so don't give up now because it looks hard. From personal experience, I've taken 7 AP classes and it was tough, but I was able to at least pass the class, and now I've gotten into my dream school which is really nice. SO I feel like your hard work will pay off eventually.
