Hey, y'all. It’s Deborah back at it again with another interview! I’m here with Fardin, who is a Senior at MVA, to help continue my interview series called, Stayin’ Studious w/ the Seniors! Today’s questions are going to focus on his experience at MVA and his future plans for once he leaves MVA!

Q: What clubs/sports team were you a part of?

Fardin: I came to MVA in 10th grade, but in 9th and 10th grade I did basketball. I did football in 9th grade. Recently I got into the green team, during 10th, 11th, and 12th. I did tour-guiding in 10th and 11th.

Q: How was being a transfer student in MVA?

Fardin: At first it was kind of tough because I was one of the few transfer students. And people were looking at who you are and what you bring. The advice for those who are transfer students is just to be yourself. This allows you to attract people that are compatible with you and your interest. So there is no need to force yourself to change to make friends. It took me a while to make my friends, find my niche and feel comfortable. But once I did everyone was really accepting including the teachers. It takes time, but it’s worthwhile.

Q: Looking back to your Sophomore to Senior year here at MVA what were some of your favorite memories?

Fardin: I don’t have any specific memories that I can think of at the top of my head. But the culture at MVA, like the basketball games when we were so miserable because we lost so badly and people were to watch. And then the games we do win no one shows, up. The days when artifacts are due and everyone scrambling and texting other people. And then the next date everyone is in the cluster knocked it. Those were some of the memorable moments. The workload, we have so much work that the memories come with the work.

Q: How has the MVA experience changed for you since we are remote?

Fardin: It has changed a lot, but that’s natural. Like we went from learning in person and being with our friends to a sudden stop. I do feel like the teachers are doing well like they are doing their best. With all the assignments and clubs. They keep us engage and check on our mental health. I feel like it’s a good thing because even though we’re remote it’s the best that we can do. We are using the resources we have to the best of our abilities. It sucks but it is what is, we move.

Q: If you had to change one thing about your academic or social life at MVA what would it be?

Fardin: Social life, I could’ve-- I don’t know what I’ll change. Like I’m still the same person that I am and I don’t regret anything. But academically, I feel like I should’ve been more engaged with my community. Like I should’ve used the [extra-time] that they gave me. Like in my old school I didn’t care about my academics as much. I went to school to hang out with my friends and have fun, but when I came to MVA I saw that the people there were different. Their mindset was high school and college [-bound] and they took advantage of the opportunities given to them. They encouraged me to do the same and it was kind of too late. But I’m glad I’m doing it before college and I could use that knowledge in college. I feel like I should’ve started that sooner, so that’s one thing I regret academically.

Q: Can you describe the college application process for us?

Fardin: If I could use one word, I would say stress. It was very stressful, but the thing is you have to manage your time. The college application is not the last time you’re gonna face stress, you’re gonna have to apply to jobs, internships, and to other schools if you want o further your education. This was like a sample/preview of what to expect in the real world. So I think you should take a load of your time, like take a few minutes to manage your time to see where you are. Keep yourself motivated to continue the process. I started the process earlier because quarantine gave me a lot of time. So I took advantage of that time and searched colleges, financial aid, and things like that. So once so school started I was set. A lot of people saved it for the last minute as if it was one of those assignments where you can push it until the last minute, but it’s not. This is your life and my tip is to manage your time wisely.

Q: Do you have any advice for any freshman or transfer students who are here at MVA for the first time?

Fardin: Now, it’s kind of tricking with covid. Like I said before always be yourself. It’s not gonna be hard to make friends because there are always going to be people out there that will like you. So just be yourself and friends. No need to be closed, being friendly is the key factor. That’s how you attract friends and meet the right people.

Q: Anything else you would like to talk about or make aware of to the MVA community or any last-minute advice?

Fardin: I’m a senior now, but when I first came here I noticed that the clubs are starting to form compared to the previous years. Like I see what y’all doing, like, with the MVA Times, I see the website, and it looks really good. All the clubs are really good as they are taking the initiative. And I like what the freshmen and sophomores are doing because it’s important to be engaged with the community. I think there’s becoming a balance between student life and academic life. And the future of MVA is looking very promising!
