Day 2

Welcome to Day Two of the 101 Spring Break Series! Today I’ll be sharing some information on scholarships and how to get one!

  1. Types of Scholarships

Before I share how to score scholarships, let’s go over the different types of scholarships. The first main type of scholarship is an academic scholarship. Academic scholarships are for pupils with amazing report cards and SAT/ACT Scores. Another type of scholarship is a personal scholarship. Personal Scholarships are awarded by individuals, companies, or nonprofits to individuals that have similar beliefs, accomplishments, or goals. For example, a student who is known for their amazing volunteer work could be awarded a community service scholarship by a nonprofit organization. Immutable Characteristic Scholarships are another type of scholarship. These are given to certain niches of students, for example, scholarships for minorities or women interested in STEM. The last main scholarship is an Athletic and Activity Scholarships. Athletic Scholarships are granted to students that have outstanding performance in a sport. Activity scholarships work the same way, but for students who are in the areas like the performing arts.

  1. Searching for Scholarships

A great place to start is Goodwall Opportunities. On Goodwall, there are approximately $1.5 million in scholarships at any given time, there are some that especially exclusive to Goodwall members or visitors. Another great palace to check is your High School’s website or school newsletter. School and college counselors are always including scholarships that local organizations send to them. And obviously, visit scholarship sites, that are purely dedicated to helping you receive a scholarship. Some great sites are Unigo, Tallo, Scholarships.com, Bold.org, Chegg, Sallie Mae, among others.

  1. Receiving A Scholarship

When you start to apply for scholarships here are some tips to follow. Find a plethora of scholarships. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, apply to simple scholarships, essay scholarships, etc. Before you start get your documents in order. Some scholarships require report cards, recommendations, resumes, essays, awards, etc. Have all this information on hand so you can complete scholarships in one sitting. Since your applying for various scholarships keep a spreadsheet or table with all of them documented. You can keep track of which ones you completed, or if one of them requires something special, deadlines, and if you got accepted/rejected. Make sure to check if they require an interview and if they do be prepared to put your best foot forward during those interviews. Lastly, be patient. Just as you have to be patient with your college acceptances, once you submit the application there's nothing you can do, so don’t dwell on it too long. Also if you get a couple of rejections, there might be a yes coming so don’t lose hope until the final scholarship decision is out.
