Welcome to Day One of the 101 Spring Break Series! Today I’ll be sharing some tips on networking.
Network w/ Friends’ Parents and w/ Parents’ Friends
As a high school student, you should start with adults you know and trust. These will most likely be adults you know because they are friends with your parents or you have a mutual connection through your parents. This could also be the parents of your friends. The benefit of this would be you be included in a larger network as these adults have their own connections as they’ve been networking for a while now. Also, they might put you in connection with adults in your interested field of study or career. This can help you land jobs, internships, or allow you to schedule a simple talk.
Network by participating in organizations and local clubs.
High School and College have a plethora of clubs and groups that you can join. Joining clubs and organizations that are related to your career can help you build the knowledge and connections you make in that field. They can also be clubs and organizations that help build your public speaking or research skills, skills that your intended career might need. This not only allows you to network and connect with your peers but with students that have similar interests and are like-minded. You can also network with the faculty advisors of these clubs or any adults that help run the organizations as they can introduce you to even more people and opportunities.
Network through Internships.
Scoring an internship is something many high school students and even college students hope for when summertime rolls around. Internships usually have networking workshops so they can help you learn even more about networking. But they also give you the chance to meet potential employers and employees that you can go to after you graduate for a real job. Having a good connection with these people can really boost your career.
The number one social media to use for networking is LinkedIn. You should make a Linkedin account as soon as possible, even if you don’t have much to put in other than your education. It allows you to keep all the people you’ve connected with all in one place. It also has a lot of great volunteering, internship, and job opportunities posted which can give you a great place to start building and creating connections. However, you can use ANY social media platform to network!
Hope this gives you the courage to start building your network!
Have a great first day of Spring Break. 🌴
