Welcome to Day Three of the 101 Spring Break Series! Today I’ll be sharing some tips on Internships.
Internships are work-programs that can last for semesters or year-long. Organizations offer internships to students who are interested in that career or looking to gain experience or skills in that niche. An intern completes assignments, research, shadow employees, among other things.
Paid Internships are internships that come w/ some type of monetary compensation. It could be a stipend or minimum wage. Student Internships are for, you guessed it, students from high school to college. A virtual internship is an internship that is conducted remotely, like most internships this year. Virtual internships are usually for jobs that most work is completed or done online. Lastly, For-Credit Internships are special intern programs that are required for a specific class in college. But it could be internships that give you school credit or internship credit as compensation for your time and work.
How to Find An Internship
You can find most internships on a regular job posting site. Some sites that you can find internships are LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, etc. You can also look on various organization’s websites to check if they have internships available for high school or college students. Check with your guidance and/or college counselors for any internships may know of, as well.
Here are some documents that you should have on hand when applying for internships.
**Send a follow-up email, if they haven’t responded in 2-3 weeks of the decision day.**
5. Preparing for Interview
If internships reach out to you for an interview here are some tips: reread the job description, research the company, prepare questions for them, and practice.
Some common interview questions that you should practice answering are...
Why are you interested in this internship?
What are your weaknesses?
What do you hope to gain from this internship?
Why do you want this internship?
Tell me about your proudest accomplishments.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Give me an example of a difficult situation you’ve encountered and how you dealt with it.
Hope this aids you in your search for an internship!
