Teenage Health:

The importance of physical health

By Vaishnavi K. (Writer)

Adolescence is the phase when our body undergoes certain changes due to hormones secretion. This is the phase when we are the most confused and at times it's challenging to accept the change we are undergoing. It is also a time when we are at the peak of productivity and most focused on our dreams.

At this growing age it is very important to take care of your health. If you are physically and mentally fit it will act as a catalyst in pursuing whatever is your dream. However, at the same time a bad friend circle can cause damage to your health and sometimes even can destroy your career and life.

Most common health problems found in teenagers include obesity, dieting leading to malnutrition, unhealthy eating (junk food) practices, use of steroids for body-building. Unhealthy body can cause negative thinking and eventually teenagers get affected as their negative thinking gives way to depression causing them to fall into a trap of smoking ,drinking etc. bad habits.

It is important to teach teenagers to take charge of their own health. Our body needs energy for growth and functioning to develop resistance from diseases and remain healthy.Food is the fuel to our body.’Balanced-diet’ is necessary to keep ourselves healthy. It is the general misconception that being healthy means being slim. Many teenagers skip meals and cut essential food to reduce weight and be slim but this often causes them to lose the essential nutrients present in the food. Also due to skipping meals and cutting the essential carbs our body goes into nutrient conservation mode in which whatever we eat gets converted to fat which eventually can lead to gaining weight. The actual meaning of the term diet is to cut down the unnecessary junk food and beverages which contain harmful ingredients.A healthy diet is composed of all the necessary nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, nutrients, etc.

HEALTHY AND BALANCED DIET:

A healthy diet is composed of all the necessary nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, nutrients, etc.

> Fruits and vegetables form the integral part of the diet as they contain most of the necessary vitamins and minerals.

> Eg. Vitamin C in citrus fruits like lemons, oranges etc.

> Vitamin A in carrots

> Pulses contain all the necessary proteins required for the body because our hormones are proteins and so proteins are regarded as the body building food.

> Fats are necessary for providing energy for doing all daily activities.

> Carbohydrates containing food also provides energy as carbohydrates breakdown to glucose which combine with oxygen to release energy in the form of heat and carbon dioxide which we exhale.

> Calcium is required for healthy bones and teeth. Vitamin D is essential for absorbing calcium from the body. So all nutrients are very important.

> Along with above mentioned nutrients water and roughage are also required.
