Express Myself.

Submission:

“... I identify as Bisexual and Non-Binary. My pronouns are she/her/they/them. My family doesn't support me as much...they only support my sexuality but not my gender identity. It's only some of my school friends and my girlfriend that completely support me. I would even get in trouble if I express myself! Do you have any advice for dealing with this? And are there any ways I can express myself without getting in trouble? Thank you!”

My Advice:

1. Do you have any advice for dealing with this? Surround yourself with love and support rather than negative energy. I know as teens we want our parent’s support even if they don't like what we are doing or who we are, but at this point in your life, you have to make sure you are surrounded by those who accept who you are and hope that your parents come around. You don't have to ignore them or lash out at them, but just kind of show them that not accepting you is causing a rift in your relationship. And they have accepted you being bi which is a fear many people in the LGBTQ+ Community don't accomplish, so it seems that they are trying and they might just need a little more time. 2. And are there any ways I can express myself without getting in trouble? If you mean at school, you could NEVER get in trouble for expressing yourself. There are students and faculty members who are part of the LGBTQ+ community and during summer bridge we were told that we should be open to them and don't discriminate/ridicule people in the LGBTQ+ community because they are people at MVA who are part of that community. But if you mean at your home, you could wear colors of the flag or even have the flag on your wall or as a key chain or pin. You can have your supportive friends actively speak to you with your preferred pronouns and have them lead by example. You could find shows and movies that represent characters like you. Hope this helps!

Good Luck ❤️
