There is a strong tendency within survivalism to separate from a society that is failing, or has failed. Mountaintop retreats, private islands, repurposed bunkers and the billionaire space race are all about securing a future for the very very few.
But salad bar survival may not always sustain us. There are certain tasks that are too complex. Certain relationship issues that are too divisive. Certain financial situations that are too overwhelming. Sometimes, the tomato and pickle sandwiches still leave us hungry and demoralized. That is okay. There is no shame in walking away from an impossible or dysfunctional situation.
Three waves of resilience research have resulted in resilience-enhancing educational and therapeutic interventions. In the first wave of inquiry, researchers explored the traits and environmental characteristics that enabled people to overcome adversity. In the second wave, researchers investigated the processes related to stress and coping. In the third wave, studies examined how people grow and are transformed following adverse events, often leading to self-actualize, client creativity and spirituality. In this article the authors examined data from a study, "Forgiveness, Resiliency, and Survivorship among Holocaust Survivors" funded by the John Templeton Foundation ( Greene, Armour, Hantman, Graham, & Sharabi, 2010 ). About 65% of the survivors scored on the high side for resilience traits. Of the survivors, 78% engaged in processes considered resilient and felt they were transcendent or had engaged in behaviors that help them grow and change over the years since the Holocaust, including leaving a legacy and contributing to the community.

The objective of this project is to identify areas of reefs with the most favorable environmental conditions for coral growth and survival under multiple climate scenarios in Guam and American Samoa. This information could be combined with an understanding of where coral are already demonstrating resilience to inform where resilience-based management strategies could be suitable now and in the future. This project developed GIS layers to show the spatial patterns in environmental favorability and resilient coral reefs. These layers included:
These data support reef managers in determining where to implement different types of management strategies. Additionally, these data are useful for determining where resilient reefs intersect with environmental conditions that further promote resilience and where reefs are resilient despite a sub-optimal environment. Inclusion of multiple climate scenarios assists reef managers in identifying how the spatial distribution of beneficial environmental conditions could change over time.
The data layers generated in this project provide the means to identify where environmental conditions are favorable for coral growth and survival, both now and through the end of the 21st century. These layers support management aimed at promoting reef resilience and protecting coral reef ecosystems.
Managers have some ability to support healthy environmental conditions through strategic action at a local and regional scale, such as water quality. These layers synthesized spatial information for several managed conditions to create a relative score for how favorable a given location is for coral growth and survival.

These conditions may require concerted global action to affect change (e.g., water temperatures) or cannot be controlled at all (e.g., wave power). These layers represent a relative score for how favorable overall conditions are for coral growth and survival from a scale of 0 (worst) to 1 (best) in each of the three climate scenarios.
Resilience can be defined as the ability of a system to resist change during a disturbance or as the ability to recover quickly after a disturbance-induced change. This project analyzed trends in coral cover from the NCRMP from 2009 to 2018 to identify sectors that demonstrated either of these criteria for resilience. Coral sectors that maintained stable coral cover at relatively high levels were considered highly resilient. Sectors that demonstrated relatively rapid increases in coral cover over time were considered moderately resilient, and sectors that lost coral cover were considered to have low resilience. This project examined how the spatial distribution of highly resilient sectors related to areas with high environmental favorability.
Prospects for coral persistence through increasingly frequent and extended heatwaves seem bleak. Coral recovery from bleaching is only known to occur after temperatures return to normal, and mitigation of local stressors does not appear to augment coral survival. Capitalizing on a natural experiment in the equatorial Pacific, we track individual coral colonies at sites spanning a gradient of local anthropogenic disturbance through a tropical heatwave of unprecedented duration. Unexpectedly, some corals survived the event by recovering from bleaching while still at elevated temperatures. These corals initially had heat-sensitive algal symbiont communities, endured bleaching, and then recovered through proliferation of heat-tolerant symbionts. This pathway to survival only occurred in the absence of strong local stressors. In contrast, corals in highly disturbed areas were already dominated by heat-tolerant symbionts, and despite initially resisting bleaching, these corals had no survival advantage in one species and 3.3 times lower survival in the other.
