It is essential that you know what JUPEB is all about before you decide whether to register for it or not. And the acronym JUPEB simply means Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board.
The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) is a nationally recognized examination organization, officially endorsed by the Nigerian Federal Government in December 2013. Its formal establishment occurred in April 2014 through collaboration with ten prominent universities, with the University of Lagos taking the lead.
JUPEB's primary role involves administering uniform and standardized examinations to candidates who have completed at least one year of approved courses in various University Foundation and Diploma Programs. These examinations serve as a gateway for students seeking Direct Entry admissions into 200-level University courses, both in Nigeria and in affiliated foreign universities.
The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) is a national examination body approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The Board has the responsibility of conducting common and standard examinations for the candidates, who have been exposed to a minimum of one-year approved learning in the Universities and are seeking Direct Entry admissions into University courses at the 200 level in Nigerian and partnering Foreign Universities. The Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board (JUPEB) is a new Advanced Level examination body recently established and coordinated by the University of Lagos. Basically, the programme is similar to the Interim Joint matriculation Board (IJMB) coordinated by Ahmadu Bello University and recognized by many universities in Northern Nigeria. JUPEB is, as of now, recognized by Federal universities in Southern Nigeria such as University of Lagos (Unilag), University of Nigeria Nsukka, University of Ibadan (U.I.), Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife (OAU), Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA),University of Ilorin, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), University of Port Harcourt, and University of Calabar. We expect that very soon more Universities will join the Board.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must possess credits in at least five relevant O'Level subjects (which must include English Language, Mathematics and any other three O'Level subjects) in WASC/SSCE, NECO, NABTEB equivalents, in not more than two sittings. Candidates with awaiting results may also apply.
Applicants are to register for a combination of 3 subjects out of 16 subjects according to their proposed course of study in the University. To be eligible to take examinations leading to the award of JUPEB's Direct Entry Certificates, the candidate must have been exposed to an intensive scheme of academic work relevant to his/her proposed university course.
Each candidate must register, sit for Examinations and satisfy the Board in three subjects and a General Studies course relevant to the proposed course in any of the universities.
Each subject is to be broken into four courses to be taken, two per semester, by the candidate. The results in all the courses are to be merged at the end of the second semester to obtain the candidate's grade in that particular subject.
Each candidate is expected to take twelve (12) courses, six per semester, and a General Studies course.
The general Studies for courses in each University Faculty will be based on relevant General courses suggested for that Faculty by each university.
The students upon completion of the programme will be issued certificates based on their level of performance which bear Letter Grades of A, B, C, D, E or F in each of the three subjects and General Studies Paper. For admission into each university, each candidate, in addition to passing the prescribed JUPEB examinations for issuing the Direct Entry Certificates, must satisfy all other conditions as prescribed by his/her university of choice.
PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION
The programme is an intensive coaching curriculum aimed at ensuring adequate exposure to fundamentals of concepts and preparation of eligible students for University direct entry admission and a good head start for University work.
The courses of study which are akin to those of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) subjects include English Language which is compulsory for all students, Literature in English, Government, History, Christian Religious Studies, Islamic Religious Studies, Geography, Virtual Arts, Music, French, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Agricultural science.
Students are required to choose three subjects in addition to English. The certificate obtained by graduates of the programme will be tenable in several universities in Nigeria and in some foreign universities. Admission is based strictly on merit and entry requirements and in proportion to the admission quota of the University for the various Faculties.
The Examination Entry for JUPEB is obtained towards the end of the training programme by the affiliated institutions for their candidates at a reasonable fee. A mock exam that forms 30% of the total score in each subject is conducted by the institution and forwarded to the board. The Board’s exams take the remaining 70%. The results issued by the JUPEB are graded like Cambridge A/Level results: A (5 points), B (4 points),C (3 points), D (2 points), E (1 point), F (0 point).
Three subjects are offered by each candidate. Combination of the grades forms the total point that is used as cut-off for the course applied for in a particular institution.
For example, University of Ibadan can say 13 points is the cut-off for Medicine and Surgery. That means, they can only admit candidates with either AAA (15 pts), AAB (14 pts), AAC (13 pts) or ABB (13 pts). Like Cambridge A/Level, the results of JUPEB do not expire. You can always use it to apply into same or another institution the following year. Candidates with JUPEB results apply to JAMB for Direct Entry admission into 200 Level instead of the 100 Level for UTME
Once a candidate begins to consider applying for JUPEB, one of the first questions that begs for an urgent answer is how JUPEB works. It is not hard. Like IJMB, JUPEB requires you to select any THREE (3) advanced-level subject combinations that go with the provisions of your preferred course of study.
YOU DONT NEED UTME (JAMB) FOR JUPEB ADMISSION. GET DIRECT ADMISSION INTO 200L IN ANY UNIVERSITY OF CHOICE.
All You need at least 5 credits (including English & Maths) from SSCE/WAEC/NECO/GCE, or be using awaiting results.
Subject Selection: Choose three A/L subjects relevant to your desired university course (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Biology for Science; Economics, Government, Literature for Social Sciences).
Intensive Training: Attend an approved JUPEB study center or affiliated university for about 9-10 months of focused coaching on your chosen subjects.Take the JUPEB exams, which include papers for each subject and a General Studies paper, usually held annually.
Results are graded with points (A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, F=0) for each subject, plus a bonus point for good performance in General Studies. Use your JUPEB certificate and points to apply for direct entry into 200 Level at partner universities without writing JAMB.
HOW LONG IS JUPEB program?
The JUPEB program normally runs for 9–10 months, the equivalent of a university session. But the duration a candidate spends before the end of a JUPEB academic year depends on when the candidate resumes.
