About Junyao Xie
Junyao Xie is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, College of Engineering, at the University of Guelph. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed papers in leading journals and conferences. He has served as an Associate Editor of the Journal of the Franklin Institute and a Session (Co-)Chair of the AIChE Annual Meeting, IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC), and American Control Conference (ACC). He is a Senior Member of AIChE, and a member of ASME, IEEE, IEEE Control Systems Society, IEEE Technical Committee (TC) on Process Control, IEEE TC on Distributed Parameter Systems, IFAC TC 6.2. on Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing, and AIChE Computing and Systems Technology (CAST) Division. He is a recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, Mitacs Accelerate Award, and the Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship. He received his PhD degree in Process Control from the University of Alberta in 2021, and his MASc degree in Mechanical Engineering (2017) and BASc degree in Machine Design, Manufacturing, and Automation (2014) from the China University of Petroleum, Beijing. Prior to joining the University of Guelph, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Instructor at the University of Alberta.
🎓 We’re hiring: There are open positions for undergraduate, MEng, MASc, PhD students, and visiting researchers. Our research group focuses on developing advanced theories and algorithms—including dynamic transfer and reinforcement learning, generative AI, optimization-based control and estimation, and distributed parameter systems—for predictive modeling and decision-making (design, estimation, monitoring, control, and optimization) in hydrogen pipelines, advanced manufacturing, agriculture irrigation systems, and beyond. Our goal is to develop intelligent, sustainable, and resilient solutions that support societal well-being and improve quality of life.
