JumpStart 1st Grade (known as Jump Ahead Year 1 in the United Kingdom) is a personal computer game created by Knowledge Adventure in 1995 intended to teach a first grade curriculum. It was reissued in 1999 with new box art, was updated significantly in 2000, and was replaced with JumpStart Advanced 1st Grade in 2002, which was later replaced with JumpStart 3D Virtual World: Trouble in Town. The original 1995 version (also referred to as the Classic Version) was the first appearance of Frankie, a brown, anthropomorphic dachshund dog who would go on to become the mascot of the JumpStart series.

Throughout the course of the game, which is set in the fictional city of Hooverville, the player assumes the role of a fifth-grade detective named Jo Hammet, and thwarts the schemes of the evil Dr. X, who plans to detonate bombs all over the city.

A highly instructional, fun-oriented introductory basketball program for children in Preschool-grade 2. Players are taught the basics of dribbling, passing, shooting, positioning, defense, and rebounding.

However, the JumpStart library features one exception to this standard: JumpStart 4th Grade: Haunted Island. Released in 1996 and rereleased the following two years, Haunted Island used the same core formula that JumpStart games aimed at third to sixth graders did, featuring an underlying story to encourage players to return. In this case, the story featured a lighter, softer version of survival horror.

In Haunted Island, players are a fourth-grade student who missed a day of school. However, they soon learn that absence was for the best, as the substitute teacher Ms. Grunkle was actually a witch who turned the other students into monsters and took them to the titular Haunted Island. To turn them back, players need to remind their classmates of their humanity by retrieving items that belonged to each of them. They'll also need to find 25 skeleton keys and Ms. Grunkle's magic wand to confront her. This requires playing various mini-games that test the player's knowledge of subjects like math, English and history.

JumpStart 1st Grade is a fantastic and motivational educational game for any child in or preparing to enter first grade at school. Even today, this game holds its value and your attention so I would highly recommend this game for anyone looking to do like us and pick these games up for their kids. JumpStart 1st Grade is not just a game for the nostalgia but really does a great job of teaching skills of reading comprehension, money, fractions, time, geography, math, and vocabulary. The JumpStart series is still available online to purchase in its original CD form, but you may possibly find it online for free. I noticed the website for the JumpStart games was still accessible but many of the links and games on it did not seem to work. So if you used to play this game, or have kids that need something to do before going back to school, definitely look this series up.
