Dr. Juliane Zenker

I am a Dorothea-Schlözer-Fellow and Senior Researcher in the Department of Economics at the University of Göttingen, while also serving as the interim for the Junior-Professorship for Development Economics. My research lies within the realm of development economics, focusing on labor markets, financial inclusion, and social protection from a microeconomics perspective, with a specific emphasis on understanding and addressing the unique challenges women face in escaping poverty.

With a strong transdisciplinary approach, my research employs large-scale field experiments and machine learning techniques to examine government-led interventions in collaboration with international organizations such as the World Bank, primarily in conflict- and climate-change affected regions with a current focus on Afghanistan.

My research has been supported by the Gender Innovation Lab at the World Bank, the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie), the Joachim Herz Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the German Research Foundation (DFG).

I earned my doctoral degree in Economics from the University of Göttingen as part of its DFG funded Research Training Group "Globalization and Development". In Spring 2020, I served as a Visiting Scholar at the UC Berkeley in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. I have served as a member of the Standing Committee on Development Economics Research for the German Economic Association since 2023.
