Numerous challenges to the U.S. Constitution marked the Reconstruction Era. This lesson reviews amendments to the U.S. Constitution that expanded suffrage during that time. Students will also learn how voting rights were denied, and how laws changed to expand rights for many in more recent history. This lesson also looks at how state laws govern our elections.
Students will learn:
--the views about Elections when our Founding Fathers framed the U.S. Constitution
--tactics used to prevent Blacks, women, immigrants, and Native Americans from voting
--how, in modern times, the power of the Executive Order may or may not expand access

You may deliver the slides directly from this page. Select "Slideshow" once you open the file embedded on the left.
The second slide is intentionally blank. It serves as a pause for you to introduce yourself. Break the ice by referencing the location of your court, highlighting what you wanted to be when you were there age. Are you from the community? Explain the purpose for your visit -- to review with them an important document (the Constitution) and an important right, the right to vote.
Classrooms today are connected to the internet. This means no more carrying around jumpdrives with lesson files. Be sure to have a brief conversation with the teacher, if you can. It will help you prepare.
