Welcome to the Jacksonville Roller Derby league! I bet you have a few questions....
I want to play, but I have never skated before. No problem, we will get you started with our local skating rink's adult skating lessons at the Mandarin Skate Station Saturday mornings and evenings.
I want to play and I have a bit of skating experience. Great! That is all you need to get started and we will teach you the rest during our 10-12 week course. If you advance faster than others, it could take less than 10 weeks. Our course will condition your body to muscles you only use when skating and condition your mind to the rules and strategy of the game so that you will be ready to play safely.
I want to play again, it has just been a really long time. Welcome back! Roller derby missed you and you are welcome to ease back into it at your own pace. You will be welcome to complete the 12 week course or fast track past it based on how quickly and safely your skills come back to you.
It looks so fun, but I'm a bit afraid. Understandable. This is a full contact sport and can be very fast paced at first. If at any point you decide the sport is not for you to play, you can still be a valuable part of the league with many off-skate positions available from Officiating (referee), co-training, coaching, committee head, or other leadership position.
Is there an age limit? You must be at least 18 years old, but Jacksonville also has a Junior Roller Derby league for ages 8-17. There is no maximum age and one of our oldest skaters is 52 years old.
How much does it cost? The 12 week course costs $200.00 (nonrefundable) which helps us pay for the space we rent. The benefit to you is two or more trainers dedicated to your success. During the twelve weeks you may progress at a quicker rate or a slower rate than the other skaters taking the same course. Regardless of your rate, the trainers will accommodate the curriculum to your needs. If you are unable to progress past a particular part of the course, you may have to restart the course or pick up where you left off when the next course begins. Also, keep in mind the cost of your gear (as seen on the "gear" page in the drop down under "home" on this page)
