Piano Day, an annual worldwide event founded by a group of like-minded people, takes place on the 88th day of the year because of the number of keys on the instrument being celebrated. Established in 2015, it is now well known across the globe. Every year it provokes special concerts, onstage and online, as well as radio shows, podcasts, and playlists. Our next Piano Day will be celebrated on 28 March, 2024!

There are so many pianos that are not being played for several reasons: they are broken, stored in piano shops or used as items of furniture rather than a musical instruments. At the same time there are loads of talented pianists who have no possibility to own a piano. Piano Day gives an opportunity for the holders of the unused pianos to place them where they can be enjoyed by a lot of people. Everybody who wants to share the joy of playing and listening to piano music is invited to participate and take action!

World Piano Day has been designed to celebrate this incredible instrument, which has brought many of us joy over the years. No matter whether you play the piano yourself or you have an appreciation for this sort of music, we can all appreciate that listening to a quality pianist is a joy.

The invention of the piano began through its predecessors, mainly through medieval times as a dulcimer, a fretted string instrument with three or four strings attached. From there it developed into the clavichord, the spinet, virginal, clavecin, gravicembalo, and finally, the harpsichord in the 15th century.

The harpsichord was invented by Bartolomeo di Francesco Cristofori and the harpsichord is considered to be to the closest predecessor to what modern-day people know as the piano because of the keyboards that activated the strings. From there, the harpsichord developed further over the next 300 years into what we know as the modern piano.

Since then, the holiday expanded as people held concerts, recitals, lectures, and demonstrations. An official website, Pianoday.org, lists all the concerts and events you can go to all over the world to help celebrate the beauty of the piano.

World Piano Day was founded by a group of like-minded people who aimed to create a platform for piano-related projects to promote the development of music and to share the joy of playing the piano.

As the Mozart-era piano underwent changes from 1790 to 1860, the modern structure of the instrument came into existence. These alterations were a result of the preferences of composers and pianists who wanted more powerful and sustained sounds. Over time, the tonal range of the piano was also increased from the five to the seven octaves that can be found in the modern-day piano.

World Piano Day is a celebration of the piano and everything connected with it. This day celebrates the music of the past and promotes its evolution. So, on this 88th day of the year, we come together to celebrate one of the greatest instruments of all time and all those who make this day possible.

Most keyboards have 66, 72, or 88 keys. For a beginner, 66 keys are sufficient for learning how to play. You can play most music on a 72-key instrument, although playing the classical piano requires all 88 keys.

This research is thus focused on the use of repertoire in the WFIMC piano competitions. It will explore the question whether there is a beneficial repertoire for contestants by analyzing the use of competition repertoire and comparing the choice of repertoire between different contestants. It will sample several well-known international piano competitions such as the Long-Thibaud-Crespin Competition in Paris, France; the Gza Anda Competition in Zurich, Switzerland; the International Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in Bolzano, Italy; and the International Telekom Beethoven Piano Competition Bonn in Germany. It will examine these factors: repertoire requirements of different competitions, repertoire choices offered for each round, repertoire difficulty, and choice of repertoire by the performers.

Helen Taylor Johannesen was a gifted and promising Juilliard-trained composer and the wife of pianist Grant Johannesen, who died tragically at age 34 in a car accident. Johannesen grew up in Salt Lake City, where she attended the McCune School of Music to study piano. She received her BM from the University of Utah in 1937, her MM from Columbia Teachers College in 1941 and her degree in composition from Juilliard in 1945, where she completed a three-movement symphony. She also joined the Martha Graham Dance Company as a composition pianist. She and Grant had one son, David, with whom Grant collaborated in the 1990's to record all of Helen's work, including Discovering Helen Taylor, vols. 1 and 2.
