New American Composers Series
March 2, 2024 | Seattle First Baptist Church
Welcome to Journey of Song, the annual continuation of our “New American Composers Series,” which was inaugurated last year in our 50th Anniversary Season. We are thrilled that, due to the generosity of our donors and members, Seattle Pro Musica is able to continue re-imagining the future of choral music by commissioning an exciting young American composer each season. Today, we feature Eric Tuan with a performance of five of his choral works, complemented by pieces by Fanny Hensel, Johannes Brahms, Morten Lauridsen, Kala Pierson, Williametta Spencer, and Seattle Pro Musica’s own Emi Nakamura.
We’ve enjoyed having Eric in Seattle this past week to work with the singers of Seattle Pro Musica, and to share his knowledge and talent with students in the Greater Seattle area via our Education and Engagement Program. We are also especially excited to be joined on stage today by students from some of the schools that Eric worked with this past week.
We are certain you will enjoy hearing Eric’s music, as well as hearing and reading his insights about his compositional process and the place of new choral music in the world today. Please join us for a meet-and-greet following the concert!
Recognized for his adventurous programming and passion for musical excellence, Eric Tuan brings a wealth of experience in the choral arts to the rehearsal hall and concert stage. He is currently in his fifth season as Artistic Director of the acclaimed Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir, where he oversees a rigorous choral training program serving over 300 youth singers, and leads its top ensembles in concerts and collaborations throughout the Bay Area, the US, and abroad. As Artistic Director of Convivium, the chamber chorus he founded in 2012, he continues to present creative programs highlighting underrepresented compositional voices and themes of social justice.
Tuan is an active choral composer and is frequently commissioned by leading choral organizations, including Volti, San Francisco Choral Artists, Peninsula Women’s Chorus, Cantabile Youth Singers of Silicon Valley, Ragazzi Boys Chorus, Musae, and Vox Aurea. His music, which often addresses contemporary social topics, has been performed by choirs throughout the US, Canada, and Europe.
His dedication to the creation and exploration of new music has led him to conduct and perform the world premieres of over thirty works. Tuan has also sung professionally with Volti, Cappella SF, and the Philharmonia Baroque Chorale, and has received acclaim for his sensitive work as a collaborative pianist, continuo player, and répétiteur (an accompanist, tutor, or coach of ballet dancers or opera singers). A third-generation resident of California's San Francisco Bay Area, he is of Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino descent.
