What is a Stage Manager?
A Stage Manager is responsible for the smooth and efficient running of a theatrical production, from rehearsals through to performances. They act as the director's right-hand person, facilitating communication, organizing backstage activities, and calling cues during performances. Essentially, they ensure all the practical and technical elements of a show are in place and running as planned
Key Responsibilities include:
Organization and Communication:
Stage Managers create and manage schedules, communicate with all departments (cast, crew, technical staff, etc.), and ensure everyone is informed and on time.Â
Rehearsal Management:
They oversee rehearsals, recording blocking, taking notes for the director, and managing the rehearsal space
Backstage Operations:
During performances, they manage backstage activities, call cues for lighting, sound, and stage changes, and handle any emergencies.Â
Prompt Book:
They compile and maintain the prompt book, which contains all the cues, dialogue, and stage directions for the show
Technical Coordination:
They work with the technical crew to ensure all equipment is functioning correctly and that the show looks and sounds as intended.Â
Problem Solving:
They address any technical or acting issues that arise during rehearsals or performances, often needing to think quickly and under pressure
Communication:
Stage Managers need excellent communication skills to relay information to all members of the production team
In short, a stage manager is the heart of a theatrical production, ensuring everything runs smoothly and that the director's vision is realized on stage.Â
