Instructional Coaching/ Leadership (2014 - current)

Soon after moving to Roanoke, Virginia from North Carolina in 2014 and I was hired as an instructional technology coach in Montgomery County. This was the first time I was in education but outside the classroom. I learned that I really enjoyed teaching adults. I mostly helped teachers integrate technology into their classroom. I also designed and led professional staff development in data collection, curriculum development, and instructional strategies. The commute was a challenge and after two years, I decided to work for Bedford County Public Schools (BCPS) in the same position with a possibility for promotion to a lead technology coach.

Soon after I transferred to BCPS, I became the lead 12-month Instructional Technology Coach for the county. I was given the opportunity to attend an EdTechTeam Google conference and became enamored by the presenters professionalism and enthusiasm. As a result, I applied for and passed my Google Trainer Certification and presented at several EdTech Conferences. At that time, I also enrolled at James Madison University to earn my administrative license. I finished the courses and passed the SLLAs to become a certified administrator in 2019. I thoroughly enjoy my present employment. I get to model best practices in the classroom, build relationships with both students and teachers, create curriculum, and mentor new teachers. And, we have a lot of fun doing it.

High School Teaching (2000-2014)

I wanted to teach high school and acquired a social studies teaching position at Davie High School, North Carolina. I went to school at UNC - Greensboro for my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction while at Davie. And, I learned how to manage multiple preps while team teaching exceptional students in Economics, Legal, and Political Systems class. I also initiated the Teen Court program and coached a little tennis while at Davie. This is also the first time I realized that the school community (parents, teachers, students, administration) was more than just academics. The school provided a base for many interactions and it felt like a family.

My family moved to Wilmington and I accepted a World & US History teaching position with Pender County Schools. I started the AP United States History program and volunteered to be a teacher for the Freshman Academy while at Pender High School. Both were career changing. It's probably the hardest I've worked to gain both the trust of the students and strive to improve their academic standing. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenges and successes of both programs.

I continued to develop leadership skills and contributed more to the school and county as the years progressed. I earned my National Board Certification in Social Studies/History. I became the Social studies department chair and a member of the School Improvement Teams at both Pender and eventually Topsail High School. I helped write curriculum, established pacing guides for the county, embraced technology to enhance teaching, as well as mentored student teachers from the UNC - Wilmington education program. Once I transferred to Topsail High School, I became involved in the Student Government Association as the program sponsor and advisor. I continued my love for Advanced Placement by establishing and offering AP Human Geography and European History classes as part of the curriculum. I also enjoyed getting back into coaching tennis as a volunteer for the boys and girls teams.

Early Career (1990s-2000)

My first job out of college was a life skills coach for adults with developmental disabilities. It was a great opportunity to understand that everyone should have the opportunity to be as independent as they are capable.

I started working in public education as an 8th grade social studies teacher at Winston-Salem's Downtown Middle School. I appreciated the support I received from both my grade level team and administration in helping me become a much better teacher those first few years. I also enjoyed coaching baseball and soccer which helped with my relationship building and classroom management.
