JONAS BRAASCH
Jonas Braasch is a Professor at the School of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he teaches in the Graduate Program in Architectural Acoustics. Jonas obtained a master's degree in physics from Dortmund University (Germany, 1998) and two Ph.D. degrees from Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany (2001, 2004) in Electrical Engineering/Information Science and Musicology. In 2006, Jonas was awarded the Lothar-Cremer Prize, the highest recognition of the German Acoustical Society for young investigators. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and currently the organization's Technical Committee Chair for Musical Acoustics. He also serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of the Acoustical Society. From 12/2022 to 10/2024, he served as acting director of the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC). Jonas' research interests span collaborative virtual reality systems, binaural hearing, auditory modeling, multimodal integration, sensory substitution devices, aural architecture, and creative processes in music improvisation. During his saxophone practice, Jonas Braasch developed the first method for wind instruments, using different sound generators (single-, double-, free-reeds, brass, flute) to create a palette of sounds and styles with one main instrument, thereby enhancing awareness of internal diversity.
