When we moved from Chicago to Austin, we expected warmer weather.
What we didn’t expect was how much that would change dating, weekends, and everyday life.
With my fiancée Hannah, we’ve naturally fallen into a rhythm of exploring the city together — and along the way, we’ve found some of the best Austin date ideas for spring.
If you’re looking for things to do in Austin as a couple, especially when the weather is perfect, here are the spots and experiences that have stood out most.
This has easily become our go-to.
Start with a walk along Lady Bird Lake (Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail), then grab coffee nearby at places like Jo’s Coffee (South Congress) or Merit Coffee (Downtown) and sit outside.
It’s simple, but that’s the point — spring in Austin makes even the most basic plans feel elevated.
Compared to Chicago, where weather often dictates how long you stay out, here you can actually linger.
Why it works:
Low pressure
Scenic views
Easy to turn into a longer date
On warmer spring days, Barton Springs Pool in Zilker Park is hard to beat.
Hannah and I like to treat this as more of a “slow date” — bring a towel, hang out in the sun, take a dip, and just relax.
It’s one of those experiences that feels uniquely Austin.
Pro tip: Go earlier in the day to avoid peak crowds.
One of the biggest upgrades from Chicago to Austin? Patio culture.
Spring evenings here are perfect for outdoor dinners at places like:
Perla’s (South Congress)
Loro (South Lamar)
ABGB (The Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co.)
Or grabbing drinks and live music at The White Horse or along South Congress Avenue (SoCo).
We’ve had some of our favorite nights just picking a place with a patio and staying longer than planned.
Why it works:
Feels spontaneous
Great conversation setting
Very “Austin” vibe
There’s something about Austin sunsets in the spring that just hits differently.
Some of our favorite spots:
Mount Bonnell for panoramic views
Pennybacker Bridge Overlook (360 Bridge) for a classic Austin sunset
Auditorium Shores for a more relaxed, city-view vibe
In Chicago, evenings often meant heading indoors.
In Austin, they feel like an extension of the day.
This might be the most underrated one.
Instead of planning everything, Hannah and I have started leaving space to just explore neighborhoods like:
South Congress (SoCo)
East Austin
Mueller District
Walk around, stop somewhere that looks interesting, grab a drink, and sit outside longer than expected.
Spring in Austin makes unplanned time feel like the best kind of date.
The biggest difference between Chicago and Austin isn’t just temperature — it’s consistency.
In Chicago:
You plan around the weather
In Austin:
You plan because of the weather
If you’re looking for Austin date ideas in the spring, the best advice I can give is this:
Keep it simple. Stay outside. Don’t rush.
That’s something Austin does really well.
And coming from Chicago, it’s something I didn’t realize I was missing.
