Canola is one of those crops that can create a large grain loss, with which farmers are worried. It is said that losses from Canola can exceed more than 10 percent of the total yield obtained. Most of the Canola losses account for more than 5bu./ac in a single harvest. But, with the John Deere combine settings for canola, grain loss is an old story. These settings can bring down the losses up to ½ bu./ac. Some of the John Deer combine settings and tips for Canola are as follows:
• The first basic thing you should look for is leaks in the system. You have to check the whole combine and make sure there are no leaks. Possible areas of damage are pickup, feeder house, elevator, etc.
• Adjust the cylinder speed to approximately 450-550 rpm.
• The fan speed is an essential factor to look upon. Adjust the fan speed such that the seeds blow off smoothly and swiftly. Run it at about 1.5 mph and 700 rpm. Don't decrease the fan speed suddenly. Decrease it in increments of 50 rpm and check for losses. Choose the speed at which losses are minimum.
• John Deere Combine Settings recommend keeping the chaffer and sieve as wide open as possible for canola.
• Over-threshing is to be avoided largely. While over threshing, the small pieces will enter the sieves. This can decrease the airflow and the ability to separate grains. Thus, the working will not be efficient. Damaged seeds also indicate the same. It is better to keep the concave setting wide.
• Another problem is under-threshing. When it is under threshed, you can see pods that are un-threshed among the grains. A way to overcome this is to either decrease the concave setting's wideness or add blanking to the concave. This can also be controlled by speed. Increase the speed or slow down accordingly, as the situation demands.
• Usually, the combine takes in the canola. While taking in, assure that the canola goes inside evenly and smoothly, without any disparities. The swather will leave a large number of bunches. Smoothen this as much as possible. Definitely, it takes extra time, but John Deere combine settings specify that this procedure can prevent large amounts of grain loss.
• It is your duty to ride your combine at a speed that can help prevent maximum grain loss. A small decrease or increase in speed can prevent subsequent grain losses.
• John Deere combine settings recommend taking care of the rotor losses as a significant point. It is advisable to run the rotor as fast as possible. Faster running can provide more power for functioning. The spin can also throw the grain away from the motor at high speeds, thereby giving no time for loss of grains. The disadvantages of this setting are under threshing and damaged grains. It is already specified above how to deal with those problems. The recommended speed is 350-650 rpm.
• The reel speed should be in concordance with the ground speed.
