The man honestly makes my skin crawl.

The fact that he was raised southern baptist is embarrassing; though shouldn't be surprising considering his formative years would have likely been before the resurgence or the innerancy controversy whatever you like to call it.

Here is a recent article I came across regarding mr osteen.

i know this is an old thread but i stumbled upon this today and i have this impression on my heart to share this with you

i went threw a very similar experience like most of you about getting (the) house however i still beileve that it will happen

for me i know that you said that you got a house not the house you wanted but i still beileve that there is a chance you will

get what you want just because it doesnt happen that does not mean that its going to never happen i beileve that

you go through hoops some times to get to where you want in life and sometimes you dont its unpredicable only the man above knows whats best for us so there-fore i encourage you to beileve have faith keep pursuing stay determined that doesnt mean that you will get your dream come true but maybe its not your dream it could be an impression on your heart to desire something and pray for it and beileve for it because it could actully be for your children or your childrens children therefore your prayers faith and patience will not be to waste i can gurantee you that if you stay active and hold fast to your faith your dreams will come true in one way or another but when god does something its better than you expected now to touch on the joel comments i beileve that it does not matter who the minister is or what their approach is the lord is our shepard and if it was not meant for us to see or hear something we would not be put in the perdicerment i encourage you all to say a prayer before tuning in to any person saying anything doesnt have to even be a televangelist pray and ask the lord to allow you to hear what your suppose to hear and understand the message that it could be a way for the lord to speak to you in give no man no woman power everything is from god

However, I am concerned (after reading several of his books and listening to many of his messages) that he is not telling the whole story.

I wrote a follow-up piece to express my specific concerns. You might want to check it out here: -quit-listening-joel-osteen-part-2/

Osteen was born in Houston, Texas, and is one of six children of John Osteen and Dolores ("Dodie") Pilgrim. His father, a former Southern Baptist pastor, founded Lakewood Church (of which Osteen is the current senior pastor) in the back of an old feed store.[6] He graduated from Humble High School, a public high school in the city of Humble, Texas, in 1981,[7] and attended Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he studied radio and television communications but did not graduate.[8][9][10] In 1982, he returned to Houston, founded Lakewood's television program, and produced his father's televised sermons for 17 years until January 1999, when his father died of a heart attack.[8][11]

Osteen memorizes his planned remarks before he delivers them, and listens back to previous ones on tape.[20] His sermons have been criticized as self-serving and revealing a poor command of Scripture. [21][22][23][24] Osteen says he chooses to focus more on the goodness of God and on living an obedient life rather than on sin,[25] and that he tries to teach Biblical principles in a simple way, emphasizing the power of love and a positive attitude.[26] When asked why he does not focus more on sin, the devil, and hell in detail, Osteen stated in an interview with CBN News:

Osteen's sermons and writings are sometimes criticized for promoting prosperity theology, or the prosperity gospel, a belief that the reward of material gain is the will of God for all pious Christians.[41][47][49][4] Critics of prosperity gospel consider its teachings anathema to the gospel of Mark:[50]

The popular pastor's message of prosperity and forgiveness attracts massive crowds. Osteen, who has gained international prominence as a pastor and best-selling author, has turned the church into the country's largest with more than 40,000 members. His followers flock to hear sermons laced with themes of faith and positivity.

Each week millions see Osteen's sermons, which are broadcast in nearly 100 nations. And in Houston after each session he greets the hundreds of guests waiting to meet him. He hugs his parishioners, signs books and Bibles and even shares stories with them.

Joel Osteen is the leader of the largest megachurch in America, with roughly 43,500 weekly visitors (via CBS News). His famous megawatt smile charms churchgoers, and his sermons keep them coming back for more. A cursory look at Lakewood Church's sanctuary, the former Compaq Center in Houston seating more than 16,000 people, might lead a skeptic to wonder how the church amassed enough wealth to purchase an arena-sized worship hall. While a slew of charlatan televangelists have preyed on their parishioners' generosity in a very un-holy way to bankroll a lavish lifestyle, Osteen appears to be on the straight and narrow.

There is a wide variety of doctrines under the umbrella of Christianity. The age-old battle between Catholicism and Protestantism is well-documented, but differences in teachings among and between Protestant denominations are vast. One area where Joel Osteen's gospel splits from that of fundamentalist Christians is the idea that God need not be feared. Osteen sparked an evolution of the meaning of "evangelical" when he found his own voice, according to the Houston Chronicle. While his father's sermons had a much more traditional bend, Joel Osteen has all but abandoned themes of judgment, fear, and guilt in favor of an inspirational message: God has good things in store for all of us. Osteen's prosperity gospel surrounds the central idea that God blesses each of us when we are a blessing to others.

Osteen told CBS News, "Most people are beaten down enough by life ... I want them to come to Lakewood or our meetings and be lifted up." This approach does not appeal to more conservative Christians, who prefer a ministry that strictly follows the bible, with a focus on salvation. Osteen told the Houston Chronicle he views himself as a preacher-cum-life-coach, explaining, "I realized I wasn't like my father. He was more of a traditional pastor. I'm more of an encourager." And that encouragement seems to resonate with his ever-growing congregation. Osteen's sermons are broadcast in more than 100 countries and more than 100 million households.

Members of all Christian denominations are taught to seek repentance for their sins. While Joel Osteen does quote scripture and reference the core tenets of Christianity in his sermons, traditional hellfire-and-brimstone preaching never really appealed to him. Instead of telling parishioners to confess and repent, he encourages them to "shake off the shame." ff782bc1db
