How We Research
We compare products from their published specs and features; the verdicts below are our independent editorial opinions.
If you want all-day battery life and a secure in-ear fit for commuting, workouts and calls, choose JLab Go Air Pop+; if you need an open-ear clip design that keeps your ears unplugged and your surroundings audible, choose MAcnas Open Ear Clip.
• JLab Go Air Pop+ — biggest strength: 35+ hours of total playtime (9+ hours per bud plus 26+ from the USB-C case) with Bluetooth 5.3, EQ3 sound tuning and IPX4 sweat resistance.
• JLab Go Air Pop+ — biggest trade-off: In-ear design blocks outside noise by default, and there's no active noise cancellation to manage it either way.
• MAcnas Open Ear Clip — biggest strength: A true open-ear clip that sits on top of the ear, so you stay aware of traffic, training partners and announcements — plus a bigger 16.2mm driver.
• MAcnas Open Ear Clip — biggest trade-off: Only about 5 hours of playtime per charge, and the open design leaks sound both ways.
• Pick JLab Go Air Pop+ if you want maximum runtime, a sealed fit and app-based EQ control.
• Pick MAcnas Open Ear Clip if you want nothing inside your ear canal and full awareness during outdoor sports.
The Go Air Pop+ is the "keep it simple, keep it running" pick. JLab quotes 9+ hours per earbud and 26+ more from the charging case — 35+ hours total — which is roughly a full workweek of commutes between charges. The case has a built-in USB-C cable, and 10 minutes of charging buys you about an hour of playback. That combination is genuinely useful if you're the type who forgets to charge until the last second.
Sound is tunable rather than fixed. EQ3 gives you three signatures — Signature, Bass Boost and Balanced — and the JLab app lets you adjust EQ and manage touch controls. Each bud has its own MEMS mic, so calls come through either side. Dual Connect means you can run one earbud solo while the other stays in the case, and Be Aware Mode pipes ambient sound in when you need it. Bluetooth 5.3 covers iOS, Android and PC with a 10-metre range, plus Google Fast Pair on Android.
Small details matter here: the earbuds are 15% smaller than the previous generation, IPX4-rated for sweat and light rain, and ship with three gel tip sizes so you can actually dial in a seal. The case is smaller than a credit card. A 2-year JLab warranty backs it all up.
MAcnas Open Ear Clip: Who It's For
The MAcnas Open Ear Clip takes the opposite approach. Nothing enters your ear canal. The buds clip gently onto the top of the ear, which the brand argues is lighter and more breathable than in-ear designs — a real advantage if you wear headphones for hours and want to avoid pressure and heat buildup. It's also marketed toward people who want to protect their hearing by not sealing the canal.
The driver is the headline spec: a 16.2mm vibrating diaphragm, which MAcnas describes as roughly three times larger than typical wireless earbuds. Bigger drivers move more air, and paired with the company's directional audio technology, the pitch is balanced output across genres with deep bass and clear call pickup. Bluetooth 5.4 is the newer standard here, with the brand claiming ultra-low latency and a Spatial Stereo Audio Algorithm for a wider soundstage — useful for video where audio-video sync matters.
Battery is the weak point. MAcnas rates 5 hours of playtime from a 300mAh battery, with a 1.5-hour charge time. There's a wireless charging case with an LED power display, which is a nice touch, and the case reconnects automatically once opened. Touch controls cover music, volume, calls and voice assistant, and it works with iOS, Android, Macs and laptops.
The brand frames this squarely at outdoor sports — running, hiking, cycling — and at all-day wearers who need situational awareness. The adjustable clamping angle and real-time sound-beam calibration to reduce leakage are the design answers to the classic open-ear complaint.
Who should buy it: runners, cyclists, hikers, and anyone who wants their ears open to the world. Who should skip it: long-haul travellers, open-plan-office workers who need to block chatter, and heavy listeners who can't charge every day.
Side-by-Side: Which Should You Choose?
• Best for staying aware of your surroundings → MAcnas Open Ear Clip. Open-ear clip design with nothing blocking the canal.
• Best for a secure, sealed fit → JLab Go Air Pop+. Three gel tip sizes (S/M/L) and an in-ear shape.
• Best for comfort over long sessions → MAcnas Open Ear Clip. Open, breathable, no canal pressure.
• Best for sound customisation → JLab Go Air Pop+. EQ3 presets plus app-based EQ and touch-control management.
• Best for the newest Bluetooth standard → MAcnas Open Ear Clip. Bluetooth 5.4 versus 5.3, with low-latency claims.
• Best for one-ear use and calls → JLab Go Air Pop+. Dual Connect plus a MEMS mic in each bud.
• Best for charging convenience → MAcnas Open Ear Clip. A wireless charging case with an LED power display, versus JLab's built-in USB-C cable and fast top-up.
For most people, I'd buy the JLab Go Air Pop+. Thirty-five hours of total playtime, a sealed in-ear fit, three tip sizes, EQ3 tuning, app control, per-bud mics and a 2-year warranty cover the everyday cases — commuting, working out, taking calls — better than the MAcnas does, and the 10-minute fast charge is the kind of thing you actually use.
The MAcnas Open Ear Clip is the right call only if the open-ear design is non-negotiable for you. If you run or ride and need to hear what's around you, or you simply can't stand anything in your ear canal, its clip-on fit and 16.2mm driver make a genuinely different product rather than a worse one. Just accept the ~5-hour runtime and plan to charge daily.
Both can work, but for different reasons. The JLab offers IPX4 sweat and light-rain resistance and a secure in-ear fit with three tip sizes. The MAcnas stays out of your canal entirely, which many runners prefer for awareness. Pick based on whether you want a seal or open ears.
JLab quotes 9+ hours per earbud and 26+ hours from the case — 35+ hours total. MAcnas quotes 5 hours of playtime with a 300mAh battery and a 1.5-hour charge time. If runtime matters most, the JLab wins by a wide margin.
Open-ear designs naturally leak more than sealed in-ears, and MAcnas addresses this with an adjustable clamping angle and real-time calibration of the sound beam to reduce leakage. It helps, but expect less isolation and more outward sound than the JLab.
The JLab has a MEMS microphone in each earbud plus Dual Connect, so you can take a call on either side. The MAcnas uses directional audio technology for clearer voice pickup. Both are workable; the JLab's per-bud mic setup is more flexible for one-ear use.
Value depends on what you need. The JLab delivers far more battery life per charge cycle, while the MAcnas offers an open-ear design, Bluetooth 5.4 and a wireless charging case. Check the current price on Amazon for each and match it to your priorities.
