Long story short: I was done with my Chinese oral exam and I was resting in the class. A kid began crying in class. Turns out this kid was from another school but was taking their Chinese exam in this school. He was struggling with the test so he had a breakdown due to pressure. The teacher was busy, so the duty to babysit was on me.
Kids are still young, they can be forgiven, same for the test. The teacher told me I can assist him in his test but just don’t give direct answers. So in some way, this is also a sort of shorting tutoring for the kid. I was panicking because I never tried teaching the kid. I was just writing down letters and phonics for him to understand, and also provide some basic understandings of the word itself so he knows why and how the logic works, so he could fill out empty spaces in the answer by himself.
I was trying to put myself in his shoes. I was reflecting on how I behave when I was young, so I know the possible ways to teach this kid accordingly. This kid is around 7~8, I shouldn’t put that much pressure on him, nor should I say too many things all at once to overwhelm him, so I was taking my time slowly, and explaining things to him in a simple language. At the end, four pages, I was able to get him through 3 pages by the time the exam ended.
That was one of the first times I had direct conversations with kids for a long time, so this is the first time I was focusing on people’s perspective in a talk. I put the kid’s mindest and his way of understanding things to account. Perspective is something important in socializing. Making me able to help out with his test in some ways. I realized I should consider other people's situation in a conversation or friendship, as they behave and think due to the factors around them.
