EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Teachers in the Chinese club “asked” me to assist in HSK invigilation on November 18, Saturday. As an exchange, I don’t need to stay in Saturday Chinese class, and they will treat me to some meal at the end of the day. They did not tell me what to do specifically, but I just knew that I would most likely be running around the school, getting stuff, doing all kinds of little work for teachers.
I was there for technical checking. For the HSK oral test, the examinees will have to plug in their earphones to PC and record their audio in Voice Recorder program. I was responsible for checking whether the program is functioning, the audio checking, and making sure the wire adaptors are working (because Wells ICT devices never function properly). In addition, I was there to provide a timer on the projector screen for candidates to know the time for the speaking section in the test, and the remainder time of the test.
The work is a bit stressful because the oral test cannot be postponed, and everyone is required to record at the same time all the way from start to finish, and issues faced during the test are prohibited. So we are all very cautious on making sure everything is on the page. That day, I participated in two oral tests and stayed in school from 8am to 6pm.
This is a new experience I acquired, as I comprehend it as a one day part time job which I never had. At the end of the day I got a free meal and a decent amount of payment. Income never comes in ease is probably what I’m thinking about the most whenever I’m reflecting on this activity. Even though I am kind of exhausted already that day, the workload is not very heavy. Communication is also important. Since I was there to assist, it is crucial to know what others assign you to do. I made quite a mess at the start of the day because I did not understand what the teacher wanted me to do.
