There is always some time people feel down or empty. And as a person who loves to express their feelings and experiences, I want to try to capture that empty and desolate emotion in not just the usual artistic way I do like drawing or painting. I want to attempt to create some music.
Initiating and Progress
I began the work by trying to think of a melody, so I started my discovery on guitar. It did not take long for a melody I like to come out. So now it is time to make that melody on a music program.
I have a little experience in making music in Garageband, a program on iOs devices. Therefore, I successfully recreated the melody in the app. However, you can’t just write a melody and call it a day, things like drums, chords, bass are needed to complete a soundtrack. So soon enough I faced my biggest problem, which is layering the soundtrack.
It took me forever to find the sound of the synthesizer I like, and blend it in with the melody. You also need variations in a soundtrack so it sounds more entertaining and less repetitive. Such an arrangement took me a while to do it as well.
My soundtrack
The overall atmosphere I try to convey in the soundtrack is hollow, slow, and melancholic. And feelings like this creep on to me often when I am by myself with no one. So I named the soundtrack “Empty Room” to express the loneliness of having no one to talk to in a room.
The drawing of the soundtrack (the single's cover), which I’m considering making a whole album and using that as an album cover. I’m trying to express the messy and unorganized mind in a person’s head, that’s why I doodle nonsense when I’m drawing the character’s head.
The overall project took me around 3~5 days to finish, because there were some struggles in between and I needed to take some break for more ideas and inspiration. I think this activity strengthened my critical thinking skill, because I need to ideate concepts out. And I have a better understanding of the aspects of music making.
