30 day drawing challenge
INVESTIGATION
&
PLANNING
In the past, I've seen several artists online doing challenges like 100 day drawing challenge, or Inktober challenge. I never envision myself being able to do it because my work flow is too slow and I’m not confident with my artwork. With this opportunity during summer break, I decided it’s time to attempt it.
Rules to my challenge being:
I need to draw something everyday for the next 30 days.
If I cannot produce it in a day, I need to find extra days to make up.
By the time I am done, I will post it online.
The rest I left fate to me and my skill.
ACTION
&
PROCESS
I would scout for ideas during the day and start drawing in the evening. In these 30 days, this challenge has become a period for me to experiment. I used this time to try out how to draw in an efficient way to shorten the time it takes to draw. At the same time, I tried out different styles and digital paint brushes, and explored different ways to approach visuals.
For instance, for some artwork, I’ve decided to paint without any sketch. For the past time I’ve struggled with good sketches and bad linearts (When I draw lineart it usually loses the dynamic and makes the overall artwork look stiff, especially on characters). I was experimenting whether without the phase of drawing sketch and lineart it can save more time and fix the issues of lost in dynamics in my painting.
Surprisingly, this way of drawing did manage to shorten the time I spent drawing to some degree. I am not sure if this solves the problem of the dynamics, but without putting time on the sketch and the painstaking process of lineart, the drawing process became much more straightforward and I got to spend a lot more of my time on the rendering and the polishing phase.

Day 10
Day 14
During these 30 days, some problems I faced including:
Unable to find inspiration or come up with ideas to draw. Which leads to:
Time strain
Pressure
To deal with these problems, I will search up references or inspiration on Pinterest, an online image gallery which personalizes what sort of content the user is interested in. In addition, I started drawing no later than 8pm, that way it guaranteed me having at most 4 hours to work on it.
There are roughly 2~3 days when I am late to the deadline (12am), but I was self-aware on that occasion, so I will spend my time finishing the late work and upload them within 1~2 hours after the deadline. That is pretty much the way I make up for the delayed illustration.
PERSONAL FAVORITES & HONORABLE MENTIONS
Day 13: Great lighting and vibrance.
Day 19: Good rendering in the metallic parts.
Day 17: Inspired from Moca meuseum art.
Day 26: Longest time taken to create.

AFTERTHOUGHTS
I feel like I underestimated myself before, I was worrying that I cannot finish an artwork per day as I produce work at a very slow pace. Turns out a lot of time I can produce work in less than 4 hours, sometimes even 3, depending on what kind of artwork I am doing. By some point in the 30 day challenge, I was able to produce a roughly same quality of work in a much lesser time than I usually do, so I do feel like I did improve during this challenge.
This project can be stressful sometimes, but it drives me to constantly upload work. Normally, I upload artwork every 2~5 months, a lot of time it’s due to my high expectation to self-criticize my work, to the point I just don’t want to upload my drawing, or I don’t have the motivation to finish what I disliked for a long period. I think this project is a way to break the loop of over self-criticism and lack of productivity. It makes me realize it is difficult to produce good quality artwork, but it is okay to share things that aren’t perfect. Most of the work I uploaded can be revamped and improved upon further fixes, but drawing something imperfect is a part of the journey to improve. Hopefully in the future I wouldn’t be that harsh on myself and be more confident to share works that may be flawed.
