I chose to illustrate a fiction piece that had elements of thriller, which I wanted to highlight. I took inspiration from the Japanese manga artist Junji Ito and, since the theme was black and white, the medium I chose was ink and pencil with line movement and stippling. 

I chose to illustrate a nonfiction piece that described a childhood memory of the author. There were dark and twisted elements that made me think that the speaker was an omnipotent god to the slugs that she was playing with. The theme was black and white, so the medium I used was graphite and sharpie with the stippling and hatching technique.

I illustrated a visual of the bone graveyard that the main characters would see on TV. The media I used was acrylic paint, sharpie, and charcoal on sketchbook paper.

There is a striking scene in the story where the main character is carefully holding a strawberry in her hand because there is a bug on it, and then her husband eats the strawberry with the bug still on it. This scene is framed with feelings of descriptions and competition demonstrating the strained relationship between the two characters. The Designer of the Journal wanted to separate the illustrations of the Journal from the art pieces that were accepted and requested that the illustrators make all of their art monochrome. The medium I used was graphite and sharpie on sketchbook paper.

I illustrated a poem that described loss and heart break. I wanted to show the speaker becoming one with the earth and decomposing with the body that is buried. The medium I used was graphite and ink on sketchbook paper.

I illustrated a fiction piece that describes the life of a sex worker who is a trans woman and the challenges of being fetishized by people who refuse to acknowledge their sexuality or take responsibility for their internalized homophobia. I used a digital medium, drawn on an iPad with an apple pencil.
