Early Sunday morning, Robert Murray of Fansided reported that the Philadelphia Phillies acquired starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo from the Miami Marlins.
Luzardo, 27, spent the past 3 1/2 seasons pitching for the Marlins, posting a 4.15 earned run average over 403 innings of work. Luzardo also spent time with the Athletics prior to being traded at the 2021 MLB Trade Deadline for then Marlins outfielder now Met Starling Marte.
The lefty was highly coveted on the trade market over the summer's trade deadline and now during the offseason. Luzardo struggled during the 2024 season as he dealt with back injuries that kept him off the field for majority of the season, only making 12 starts.
Luzardo pitched at an All-Star level during the 2023 season for Miami, a year that they made the postseason and were eliminated by the Phillies. In 2023, Luzardo had a 3.58 ERA over 32 starts, a career high.
The Phillies also acquired C Paul McIntosh from Miami in the deal. McIntosh, the Marlins 30th ranked prospect, hit 12 home runs in 117 games for Double-A Pensacola in 2024. McIntosh attended West Virginia University before signing with the Marlins in 2021.
In this deal, the Phillies parted with INF Starlyn Caba. Caba, who was the 4th ranked prospect in the Phillies system at the time of this trade, is seen as future contributor to a major league squad. Now the Marlins have his contract. Caba joined the Phillies officially in 2023 after signing with them as an international free agent.
The Phillies also dealt OF Emaarion Boyd to Miami in the trade. Boyd made to Single-A Jersey Shore in his short time with the Phillies, as he was drafted in the 2022 MLB Draft. Boyd posted a .647 OPS during his time in Jersey Shore in 2024.
