Joel W. Gannett

Retired former Senior Scientist at

Bell Labs/Bellcore/Telcordia/Applied Communication Sciences/Vencore Labs

Dr. Joel Gannett is an experienced researcher with broad interests. During his industrial career, Joel Gannett explored a wide range of technological and scientific issues related to microelectronics and lightwave telecommunications. The publications and patents listed below give the flavor of Joel's interests and achievements.

Joel Gannett has also contributed outside the technology sphere. His paper on Einstein's Theory of Relativity, titled Nothing but Relativity, Redux, drew considerable attention when it was published by the European Journal of Physics in 2007. Joel's relativity work was the subject of a feature interview article by reporter Lisa Zyga of the science news service PhysOrg.com.

Joel Gannett received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, where he minored in Mathematics and Physics. Joel also received his Master of Science degree from the Department of EECS at Berkeley. Versions of both his Ph.D. dissertation and his M.S. research report were published in refereed journals. Joel's B.S.E.E. degree, awarded with High Distinction, is from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu.

After graduating from Berkeley, Joel Gannett was hired by George E. Smith, co-recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics, to work in Smith’s department at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey. Joel spent the bulk of his career at Bell Labs and its progeny companies (Bellcore, Telcordia, Applied Communication Sciences, and Vencore Labs).

Joe Gannett (as he is known to family, friends, and colleagues) retired in 2015 but remains a Life Senior Member of the IEEE. Joe continues to pursue research in a variety of topics. He is especially interested in cracking the mystery of human (and animal!) consciousness.

In addition to his research activities, Joel Gannett has tried his hand at creative writing. His four novels, published under a pen name, have delighted readers worldwide.

Joel Gannett's Erdős number is 3 (see his 1991 published paper co-authored with Stuart Haber et al.).
