Passengers must check their baggage at the Jetstar Bag Drop counter before the check-in deadline for the flight. Passengers with bulky or excess baggage should arrive at the airport as soon as check-in opens for the flight. When traveling with babies, strollers and portable cots can be checked in free of charge, only at the check-in counter.
Optional Baggage Allowance
Optional baggage allowance can be added at the time of booking, for a fee. You can add and adjust the amount of your checked baggage according to your needs. You can manage the baggage allowance for each passenger and also choose a different amount of baggage for each flight (outbound and return flights). This means Jetstar gives you the option to buy only the baggage you need. For the Starter fare, you can choose from 15 kg to 40 kg of checked baggage in 5 kg increments, per passenger, per flight. Business Class passengers can purchase an additional 10 kg of checked baggage in increments of 5 kg, per passenger, per flight.
If you need to add baggage after you've made your booking, you can do so via My Jetstar online, by calling Jetstar Booking or at the airport, but for a higher fee. However, as Jetstar offers more than 50% off airport rates at the time of your initial booking, the cheapest way to purchase your checked baggage allowance is when you book your flight.
Size Restrictions
Size restrictions apply for checked baggage depending on the carrier operating and the type of aircraft:
2 m – Jetstar Pacific (BL) flights are operated with A320 or A321 aircraft.
2.3 m – Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) and Jetstar Japan (GK) flights operated with A320, A321 or Bombardier Q300 aircraft
2.77 m – Jetstar (JQ) flights are operated with Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft.
If your itinerary contains multiple flights with two or more types of aircraft, a smaller limit will apply. Provided sufficient space is available, large items can be included as part of your checked baggage allowance. Excess baggage charges will apply if a large item causes your total checked baggage to exceed the checked baggage allowance included in your fare.
Any checked bag with a single side longer than one meter (39 inches) is an oversized item subject to an oversized item handling fee (assistance devices, mobility aids, medical equipment and baby items excluded). Each passenger can check up to two oversized items. The oversized item fee is a separate handling fee per item, per flight that can be paid online, through the Call Center or at the airport:
One of the reasons baggage allowance is complicated is that there are usually two different sets of rules for each type of ticket and fare.
One covers checked baggage — the bag that goes in the plane's hold — and the other is for your carry-on bag.
Carry-on, or cabin baggage — is what you bring into the plane cabin with you, so you need to make sure all your essentials fit within this allowance.
Jetstar's most popular tickets come with hand luggage only as standard. If you want to put goods in storage, you need to buy the allowance you need - from 15kg to 40kg. This means you only pay for what you need.
The cost of adding hold baggage varies depending on the route and when you arrange your extra bag. We will discuss this in a moment. First, let's look at the cabin baggage arrangement.
Starter Fare tickets are the basic ticket type with Jetstar. You can bring up to 7kg of carry-on luggage, which can be divided into 2 different items. One bag or case must fit in the overhead locker, and the second item can be something like a handbag or laptop bag that can fit under the seat in front.
If you want to bring more into the cabin, or have any luggage, you will need to upgrade your ticket or purchase an additional allowance. More on that later.
You can take 2 items of hand luggage, up to a total weight of 14kg. As with Starter Fares, one item of luggage must fit in the overhead locker while the other can be placed under the seat in front of you. Both bags should not weigh more than 10kg.
We mentioned that Jetstar's most popular ticket types do not include hand luggage. However, you can upgrade to get additional benefits including increased baggage allowance and other benefits such as extra legroom and in-flight meals. See all options when you book your ticket online.
If your package or ticket type does not include hold baggage, you can purchase a hold baggage allowance when you book your ticket, after booking or at the airport. The cheapest way to manage your luggage is to book an allowance when you buy your ticket. The price at the airport is always the most expensive option.
The cost of carry-on baggage will vary depending on the route you fly, the weight of your bag and when you arrange additional baggage. Log in to your existing booking to view costs online.
If you arrive at the airport with more luggage than you can take according to your booking type, you will pay an excess baggage fee.
You can take sports equipment on Jetstar flights. You need to make sure you have enough baggage allowance, and you may have to pay an oversized item fee if you're carrying anything longer than 1 meter in any direction.
There is a maximum size allowance that may apply if you need to bring something very large. This varies depending on the type of aircraft that will be used for your route, so you should check with Jetstar's customer service center before traveling.
An oversized item is one that measures over 1 meter in any direction³. If you have large luggage, you will pay an additional fee at the airport of AUD 25 per item when flying with Jetstar. If you use one of the other Jetstar companies, such as Jetstar Pacific, fees may vary and will usually be charged in the local currency of your departure airport.
It is also useful to know that no individual bag can weigh more than 32kg, regardless of how much baggage allowance you have purchased.
If you want to go on holiday with Jetstar, it's worth knowing in advance how much luggage you can take with you. That will help you avoid fees and hassles at the airport.

Infants not occupying a seat are not entitled to a checked baggage allowance, but you can check prams/strollers, portable cots, high chairs and car seats/booster seats/baby capsules, free of charge.
According to Jetstar's baggage allowance rules, any sports equipment with sides over 1m long will incur an oversized handling fee of AUD 25 per item, one way.
Smaller musical instruments can be brought into the cabin with you. Additional seats must be purchased for instruments weighing between 7 kg and 15 kg. Instruments over 15 kg must be checked. Note that there are restrictions on the larger number of instruments that can be carried on one flight.
