When Nate and Sully enter the chamber beneath the clock tower in Chapter 11, they find a large wheel labelled "Founders". To solve this puzzle, they must correctly align the sigils of various pirate captains, as indicated by the first two - Henry Avery and Thomas Two.

The first pirate (who some of you might recognize) has symbols sitting next to his burned elbow. The next one, eliminating the other two on the list Sam sends over, is Tarik bin-Malik, with the markings for his Serpent symbol above the right side of his head. Several years before the events of the first game, Nate and Sam hunt for the treasure of pirate Henry Avery, who plundered a fortune during the 1695 Gunsway heist. Alongside Rafe, the Drake brothers infiltrate a Panamanian jail to access the former cell of Avery's first mate, where Nate discovers a hollow St. Dismas idol. When the prison warden who aided them demands a cut, Rafe impulsively kills him, triggering a frantic escape. Nate and Rafe successfully escape, but Sam is shot by guards and presumed dead.

In King's Bay, the Drakes and Sully learn that Avery, Thomas Tew, and ten other pirate captains pooled their treasures. Following clues to a tower in the city, Nate uncovers a map to Libertalia, a fabled pirate utopia founded by the other captains. The group returns to their hotel to find Elena waiting. Upset at Nate's deception and the appearance of Sam, whom Nate had never mentioned, Elena leaves. Nate sends Sully after her. The Drakes follow the map to an island and discover Libertalia. They find evidence of a civil war; the founders stole the city's treasure and moved it across the island to New Devon, an extravagant and well-fortified town built for them. The brothers are cornered by Rafe, who reveals that he released Sam from jail two years ago and that Sam's Alcazar story is a lie as Alcazar died in a shootout months ago. He actually double-crossed Rafe to resume the search with Nate. Deciding that he needs Sam, Rafe prepares to shoot Nate; Sam shields him, but Nate is knocked off a cliff and falls unconscious.

Nolan North and Emily Rose portrayed Nathan Drake and Elena Fisher, respectively, in Uncharted 4, reprising their roles from previous entries in the series. Richard McGonagle reprised his role as Victor "Sully" Sullivan.[20] Their performances were mostly recorded using motion capture technology, with remaining audio elements recorded later in a studio. The relationship between Nathan and Elena was a central focus of development, as the team attempted to humanize Nathan more than previous games. Druckmann described Elena as "a very strong person who loves [Nathan] very much", ultimately encouraging her decision to return to him. When Elena witnesses Nathan's excitement regarding his discovery of the pirate captains, she realizes it is "what was missing" for them as a couple, and she "gets to see [him] as the adventurer she loves". The scene in which Nathan and Elena become trapped in a net was seen as a metaphor in which the two are drawn closer together, cooperating to escape before reconciling over a humorous situation. Straley found that Uncharted 4 allowed Nathan to discover his motivation, and to become vulnerable and trust another person in his life; events in his early life led him to develop a sarcastic attitude as a defense mechanism, which begins to diminish after receiving Elena's love and trust.[29] Druckmann felt that the story questioned the possibility to "balance passion versus settling down", referencing the effects of crunch on the developers' lives.[39]

Captain Henry Avery is the overarching antagonist of the 2016 video game Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, the fourth installment of the Uncharted video game series. He was a legendary English pirate and the leading founder of Libertalia, where his goal was to con every pirate into coming to his so-called paradise so he could enslave or kill them and steal all of their treasure for himself.

About 6 years ago in August 1695, Avery joined forces with other pirate captains, including Thomas Tew, and sailed to the Straits of Bab-el-Mandeb. Avery was elected as admiral of the pirate ship flotilla and commanded over 400 pirates, despite Tew being more experienced. Once there, they ambushed the Mughal fleet that was making its annual pilgrimage to Mecca. The treasure convoy was comprised of 25 ships, including the 1,600 ton flagship Ganj-i-sawai, better known as Gunsway.

The pirates eventually caught the Mughal convoy four or five days later. During the actual battle, only the Fancy, the Pearl (William Mayes), and the Portsmouth Adventure (Joseph Farrell) were present. Avery's opening broadside destroyed the mainmast of the ship, crippling it in the water. With the ship incapacitated, Avery and his crew boarded. Soon the crew of the Pearl joined them on the deck, and the pirates fought them for two to three hours.

Eventually, the Indians surrendered and Avery lost many of his crew in the raid as a result. The Gunsway was carrying nearly 600,000 (approximately worth now $18M and 13M) in precious metals and jewels. This ultimately made Avery one of the richest pirates ever.

Avery called on famous pirates of his time, Tew, Mayes, Farrell, Richard Want, Adam Baldrige, Anne Bonny, Christopher Condent, Edward England, Tariq bin Malik, Yazid al-Basra and Guy Wood. The twelve of them, collectively known as the Founders, travelled to an island near Madagascar and named it Libertalia. Avery gathered the greatest architects and engineers to build statues, elevators and houses all over the island, intending on making it a haven for pirates. The pirates then set up deadly tests in various locations in Europe and Africa to prove if any treasure hunters and pirates were worthy of joining their colony.

However, beneath all the glamour and promise of riches and freedom from the law, Libertalia was actually a trap to lure pirate colonists to the island. There, they would be capture, enslaved and/or killed whilst having all of their treasures stolen, making it Avery's greatest con ever. Eventually, the colonists formed a rebellion and engaged in a civil war with the Founders, wanting to reclaim their stolen treasure. In response, the Founders moved the riches from the treasury's vault to their mansions. They then had their military battle the colonists and won the war, resulting in the colonist population wiped out and any survivors were made examples of by locking them into gibbets and left to starve to death.

Eddy Raja's pirates are a band of ruthless Indonesian pirates that appear in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune; they are the main group of enemies encountered throughout the first half of the game, led by Indonesian criminal Eddy Raja. They are the weakest enemy in the series.
