If you're interested in a letter of recommendation for an REU or graduate program in mathematics or a related field, please follow the procedure outlined below. Such a letter is stronger if we have interacted (before or after class, at office hours...) and if you either received an A or A- in the course or showed substantial improvement in the course after a rough beginning. Please try to let me know at least a month in advance. (I will still try to accommodate shorter deadlines, but the letter is likely to be better if I have more time.)
Please send me any of the following which are relevant to your situation:
A list of links to the instructions/prompt for the letter writer, if any.
Instructions on how to submit (e.g., email to XXX, "you will receive an email", or send me a link, etc).
The first deadline, and a list of everywhere the letter should be sent.
Who are your other letter writers? Include a sentence of context too (e.g., advised my honors thesis).
Once you have drafts of anything you're submitting please send them to me. The basic principle is that I can't write about something I don't know about.
If you are an undergraduate, I'd prefer you send an unofficial copy of your transcript too.
I have a strong preference for PDF, plain text documents, or spreadsheets. Please include your name in the filename of any documents you send me.
I will let you know when I have submitted the letter. If it is getting close to the deadline and I have not done so, please follow up.
