Jelly beans are small bean-shaped sugar candies with soft candy shells and thick gel interiors (see gelatin and jelly). The confection is primarily made of sugar and sold in a wide variety of colors and flavors.

It has been claimed that jelly beans were first mentioned during 1861, when Boston confectioner William Schrafft[1] urged people to send his jelly beans to soldiers during the American Civil War. It was not until July 5, 1905, that jelly beans were mentioned in the Chicago Daily News. The advertisement publicized bulk beans sold by volume for ten cents per pound, according to the book The Century in Food: America's Fads and Favorites. Most historians contend that jelly beans were first associated with celebrations of Easter in the United States sometime during the 1930s due to their egg-like shape.[2]

The basic ingredients of jelly beans include sugar, tapioca or corn syrup, and pectin or starch. Relatively minor amounts of the emulsifying agent lecithin, anti-foaming agents, an edible wax such as carnauba wax or beeswax, salt, and confectioner's glaze are also included.[3] The ingredients that give each bean its character are also relatively small in proportion and may vary depending on the flavor.

In United States slang during the 1910s and early 1920s, a "jellybean" or "jelly-bean" was a young man who dressed stylishly but had little else to recommend him, similar to the older terms dandy and fop. F. Scott Fitzgerald published a story about such a character, The Jelly-Bean, during 1920.[4]

When Beatlemania broke out in 1964, fans of the Beatles in the US pelted the band with jelly beans (emulating fans in the UK who threw the British candy Jelly Babies at George Harrison, who reportedly liked eating them).[5][6][7]

My guess is that when you thought about it, you decided to stick with your original decision and eat the green one. Because with two jelly beans left, you had a 50/50 shot, and it feels better to stick with your original choice than to switch. Right?

You could run a pretty quick simulation: If you ran this process 300 times and picked the green jelly bean each time, about 100 of the times, it would be safe to eat and switching to the red bean would kill you. The other 200 or so times, the green jelly bean would be poisonous and switching to the red bean would save you.

The exact origins of the jelly bean are lost in time, and only a part of its history is known. Most experts believe the soft center is a descendant of a Mid Eastern confection known as Turkish Delight that dates back to pre-Biblical times.

Somehow the two processes made their way to America. The earliest known appearance of a jelly bean is a 1861 advertisement for William Schrafft of Boston that promoted the sending of jelly beans to soldiers in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Why are they called jelly beans? Candymakers have always made candy into novelty shapes. Shaping candy into things people knew was, and still is, common. In 19th century England, candy mice were a favorite of children during the holidays.

In 1965 the Herman Goelitz Candy Company began reenergizing this traditional candy by pumping up the flavors and their product was a favorite of the Governor of California, Ronald Reagan. Today the humble jelly bean is considered as American as apple pie!

These jelly bean sugar cookies are pretty buttery, so chilling the dough is important. You only need to chill the cookie dough for 1-2 hours. The cookie dough gets a little hard after 1-2 hours in the refrigerator, so I recommend rolling the dough into balls before chilling.

Hi Christine! Sounds delicious. We would use our chocolate cookies recipe instead, following those cookie dough, chilling, and baking instructions. You can make them smaller (the bake time will be slightly shorter) and add jellybeans on top. Let us know if you give it a try!

Made these today wth Cadbury mini eggs instead of jelly beans and they are so cute and Yummy! Reminds me of a slice and bake cherry cookie recipe of yours I make often. I thought the mini eggs would fall off but after the cookies cooled they were stuck on pretty good. The first ones in the oven spread a bit too much, but subsequent ones were ok, so I would suggest longer than an hour chill time.

I made these for Easter dessert and they were a hit. Easy to make, easy to bake, and easy to eat!!

I sprinkled colored sugar (easter colors green, pink, lavender and yellow) over the cookies as soon as they came out of the oven and pressed in 3 jelly beans.

These look great! I made your Christmas drop cookies and they were a hit! Can you roll these in the sugar sprinkles to cover them before baking and then adding the jelly beans or frozen chocolate eggs after?

Here we come to our first major differencebetween this third edition and its ancestors.Whereas previous Sour Patch (Kids) jelly beans have employeda coating on the outside of the beans to give theman immediate pop of acidity upon hitting the tongue, the third edition eschews that approach andembraces a more traditional smooth-shelled approach.I turned on the matte finish in the second edition review,so I consider this to be a significant improvement.

I went to Hobby Lobby earlier this week to grab everything I need for this project. Only problem...I can't find those jelly beans. I have been to Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Target, CVS, Walgreens and Wal-Mart with no luck. Where did you get yours?

I am linking over to you on my blog brianandsophia.blogspot.com . This project was some craft therapy for me after receiving terrible news about our country last night. I used Brach's pastel speckled jelly beans only $1 a bag at Walmart.

Thank you for sharing! I had admired your Halloween Candy topiaries but never got around to making one!! I made the jelly bean topiary today and plan to post on my blog with a couple of links back to your blog.

How would I make this type of topiary for mother's day...flowers? Can you give me some hints? Also, with the jelly beans or gum drops do you have to spray them to preserve it?

One tactic that was used to prevent Black people from voting during the Jim Crow era was the so-called jelly bean test. Some registrars would ask prospective Black voters to guess the number of jelly beans in a jar. A local woman said her great aunt experienced the test.

In July, former President Barack Obama mentioned the jelly bean test in his eulogy at the late Georgia Congressman John Lewis' funeral, while also bringing up voter suppression tactics that exists today.

We played this game after giving a short presentation about the basics of what budgeting actually is, and why it's important. We gave the kids 20 jelly beans each, and they had to figure out how to cover living expenses, both needs AND wants, with the 20 bean per month salary.

Plan on about 30 minutes to play this game, including discussion time. If you have a lot of kids playing, break them up into pairs or groups of three to work together. If there are just a few, they can play on their own. Each kid or group will need their own set of worksheets and a snack bag filled with 20 jelly beans.

The jelly bean President Reagan preferred, however, was a legend itself. When he first began eating jelly beans, they were larger confections than the modern bean, with flavoring in the outside shell. The inside of the beans were an unflavored sugary filling. At a 1966 campaign event, however, the future president was told about a new, more flavorful type of jelly bean.

When Ronald Reagan ran for Governor of California in 1966, he began eating "Goelitz Mini Jelly Beans" as part of his successful attempt to give up pipe smoking. Herman Goelitz Candy Company, the Oakland-based producer of the jelly beans, sent a monthly shipment to the Governor's Office throughout Reagan's two terms in Sacramento. The company also made a custom-designed jelly bean jar for Reagan.

After Reagan left the governorship, he continued to receive shipments of Goelitz Mini Gourmet Jelly Beans directly from the company. When Herman Goelitz introduced its Jelly Belly brand of jelly beans in 1976, it began including the new brand in Reagan's regular shipment. Within two years, the shipment consisted entirely of the Jelly Belly brand.

Three and a half tons of red, white, and blue Jelly Belly jelly beans were shipped to Washington, DC for the 1981 Inaugural festivities. Blueberry, one of Jelly Belly brand's most popular flavors, was developed in 1980. Its blue color completed the other flag colored Jelly Belly jelly beans, the red (Very Cherry) and white (Coconut).

Herman Goelitz Candy Company provided the Reagan White House with Jelly Belly jelly beans for all eight years of Reagan's presidency. In February 1981 Herman G. Rowland, the president of Herman Goelitz and a fourth-generation descendant of the company's founders, received official Government authorization to develop a Jelly Belly jelly bean jar with the Presidential Seal on it. These Presidential jars of Jelly Belly beans, each in its own blue gift box, were given by Reagan to heads of state, diplomats, and many other White House guests.

Note: From 1978 to 2001 Jelly Belly jelly beans were jointly manufactured by two Goelitz-owned companies, with headquarters in California and a plant in North Chicago, Ill., respectively. In 2001 the two companies, Herman Goelitz Candy Company (California) and Goelitz Confectionery Company (Chicago area), combined into one corporation named Jelly Belly Candy Company headquartered in Fairfield, California.

I also made a coloring sheet that has the prayer and a jelly bean they can color in with the color corresponding to the line in the prayer. Or you can find a jelly bean and place it on the correct spot!
