Where did I leave my car keys? What is his name again? All of us lose our keys and forget names, but those slips of memory seem to become more common as we age. In addition to being a daily annoyance, changes in memory can also affect problem solving and reasoning skills, language abilities, decision making, and even activities like driving. There has been a great deal of research on memory over the last 50 years – despite this, much remains to be learned. At Griffith University and the Menzies Health Institute Queensland, we are trying to develop simple training techniques that can help people to improve their working memory and to prevent age-related memory changes.
First, you will be asked to complete a short questionnaire asking some general demographics questions and some specific questions about your vision.
Second, your vision will be quickly tested by asking you to read some letters off a visual acuity chart (similar to the quick vision test you receive when applying for a driver’s license).
Third, you will be asked to complete three short and easy computer tasks in which you will see a briefly-presented display of objects (such as circles or the outlines of boxes). You will be asked to remember what you saw for a few seconds and then to indicate whether a specific item is one that you saw before or not. The speed and accuracy of your responses will be measured. Each computer task will take no more than about 8 minutes to complete.
As a thank-you for your participation, you will receive a $40 gift card to the Coles-Myer group and will also be entered into a draw to win a $350 pre-paid visa card.
Your participation in the research will take 1 hour.
During your visit, you will meet with one of the VCA lab researchers, either Dr. Lisa Jefferies or Michael Fernandez. We will let you know in advance who you will be meeting.
The research will take place at the Health Center (building G40) of the Griffith University Gold Coast campus. Please let the researchers know in advance (by phone or email) how you will be coming to campus, and we will meet you at your arrival point.
