This is an introduction to the Half-life model Viewer (HLMV herein) for the Source Engine. This program is a crucial part of the Source SDK and can be quite useful for tinkering, debugging model errors, hit-boxes, texture alignment and general viewing.

Solokiller's Half-Life Model Viewer is a GoldSrc model viewer written from the ground up for improved performance, memory usage, and cross-platform portability when compared to Jed's Half-Life Model Viewer. This makes it much more stable and efficient, and it comes with a host of other new features and improvements. You can load a model using the "File" menu or by dragging it into the viewer.

For many years, Jed's Half-Life Model Viewer was considered the de facto model viewer for GoldSrc games. Originally a fork of Mete Ciragan's Half-Life Model Viewer, Jed's Half-Life Model Viewer features significant improvements over it. These include a re-organized GUI, a front-end for Studiomdl (compiling) and Mdldec (decompiling), a poly counter, a UV map viewer, the ability to dump a host of model info to a text file, support for transparent and additive textures in the viewer itself, and its own set of bugfixes over the original HLMV.

The defacto tool for previewing Half-Life models is Mete Ciragan's Half-Life Model Viewer. However, the current version doesnt support the new texture features of the Half-Life engine. To get around this, I've modified the source of the v1.25 of the Half-Life Model viewer and added support for these features as best I can plus added some new ones.


Now, just open hammer, create a room, a light and an info_player_terrorist. Create a prop_static or prop_dynamic, choose
