Green Shutter Hotel

The Green Shutter Hotel is a historic hotel building located in downtown Hayward. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, and is on the California Register of Historical Resources.

The building was constructed in 1920 and was first used as a hotel after a large addition in 1926. It is currently used commercially, and houses the Green Shutter Hotel (single room occupancy) on the second floor, with retail businesses on the ground floor, .

Blacksmith, Henry Eggert built the original Eggert Building, but it was banker I. B. Parsons who convinced Henry’s two sons (Herman and Henry Jr.) to turn the top of the building into a hotel. While outfitting the hotel, Henry ran into some shutters that had been returned by the original customer, bought them, and painted them green. And that’s how the Green Shutter Hotel got its name. It was nearly destroyed by fire in 1950, but the owners had faith in its future and rebuilt.

The building is now under new ownership and has been repainted. No more green shutters, so we will have to look at old photos like this to remember what the building used to look like.
