All Saints Church
All Saints Roman Catholic Church is a true Hayward landmark. Located on the crest of a hill on 2nd Street, its two blue-domed towers can be seen from many locations all over town. In June of 1909, Archbishop P. W. Riordan, placed the cornerstone of the church in front of 5,000 spectators. The church was built, by an all-volunteer work force, in the lavish Spanish Baroque style, at a budget of $30,000.
All Saints Mission was originally founded in 1868 as an extension of St. Leander Church in San Leandro. By 1898, Hayward had grown large enough to merit its own parish, and when the last nail was hammered in 1909, the church seated 625.
The church opened its parochial school in 1947, and expanded so much that an additional auxiliary building for church and school administration was added in the early 1960s. The structure has suffered a few minor fires over the years (losing all its hymnals in one incident), but was always repaired, and was earthquake reinforced and renovated in time for its 75th Anniversary in 1984.
