Ace Hardware
This wonderful old-time sign, once on the corner of B Street and Watkins advertised the Ace Hayward Hardware store formerly known as Boye Hardware & Paint Company.
The building was erected in 1900, and was no ordinary hardware store, but an example of yesteryear shopping - where all your needs were met in the old fashioned way, with well-stocked shelves and excellent customer service the norm.
During the Great Depression, the store featured a pee-wee golf course upstairs which served as inexpensive entertainment for local families. There was even a boxing ring set up in the back corner of the second floor that was used for training and occasional Friday night or Saturday afternoon matches.
Unfortunately, the store closed at the end of 2020. Those of us who frequented the store over decades will surely miss it.
