The intention of this work is to create connection between memory and scent through conversation and reflection. Considering what memories, imaginations, and ideas are conjured through the smelling of specific single-note essential oils.
Experience begins with some agreements for the group based on our values. We will not use phones, we will listen well to one another, we will not disparage another’s preference. “I don’t like _______, but I like people who like _________.” Conversation is facilitated to recall smells from childhood or present that have a specific associated memory. Guests are invited to share with the group or reflect on their own olfactory/ memory connections.
Essential oils are passed around the circle for participants to experience and discuss. Participants are invited to carry a memory/smell home by filling a tiny vial with the oil of their choice.
The physical connection of smell with memory creates a bridge to one’s past as well as to those around them through discussion that is the catalyst for a shared, embodied experience. Participants are invited to be present in the moment even as they reflect on memories of the past and to consider what we can learn from each other’s preferences and the lived experiences that shape those preferences.
