Reproductive Labor

Zine + Performance

Free eight page zine, created with a single sheet of copy paper. Double sided copy reveals hidden cookie recipe when zine is completely unfolded. This work is designed to introduce audience/participant to the language of "reproductive labor" and to facilitated consideration of the value inherent in this kind of work. 

Performative action: The artist sits on a handmade quilt, on the floor of WNY Book Arts, reading children's literature aloud from 10am to 3pm during the BookArts Festival. This piece, as an exercise in endurance, depicts the perseverance, faithfulness, and consistency required of reproductive laborers. Furthermore, there is an opportunity for participants to write down on a board any books or other works that they consider to be a valuable part of their own reproductive labor.
This is an articulation and exaggerated example of a specific action performed, often daily or even multiple times a day, by many care workers. Reading aloud is a direct action that that shapes the culture, beliefs, and world view of those who participate in it.
