If you want a wireless companion with active noise cancellation, massive battery life, and the punchy bass needed to crush your workout at the gym, choose JBL Tune 770NC; if you need professional-grade, open-back studio monitors for critical listening in a quiet room, choose Audio-Technica ATH-R50X. These two headphones live in completely different worlds. One is built for isolation, movement, and long days on the go, while the other is engineered for precision, transparency, and the specific demands of audio production. Picking the right pair depends entirely on whether your priority is mobility or accuracy.
• JBL Tune 770NC: Delivers up to 70 hours of playback with adaptive noise cancelling and Bluetooth 5.3, but relies on plastic construction and lacks a wired headphone jack option.
• Audio-Technica ATH-R50X: Offers an authentic open-back soundstage with exceptional transient response and replaceable earpads, but requires a wired connection and provides zero isolation from the environment.
• The Verdict on Fit: The JBL is for the commuter, traveler, or athlete who needs to block out the world; the Audio-Technica is for the engineer, producer, or audiophile who needs to hear every detail without distraction.
The JBL Tune 770NC is designed for people who refuse to be tethered by wires and demand that their music stay loud and clear even when chaos surrounds them. Its standout feature is the adaptive noise cancelling system, which actively filters out background noise so you can focus on your studies, your commute, or your training session without interruption. If you are someone who frequently finds themselves in noisy environments—like a crowded subway, a busy office, or a loud gym—you will appreciate the ability to silence the world instantly. The Smart Ambient feature also allows you to switch modes to hear your surroundings or have conversations without taking the headphones off, which is a crucial safety and convenience factor for anyone moving through public spaces.
Battery anxiety is a thing of the past with this model. The specifications show a staggering average battery life of 70 hours, meaning you can listen for weeks without needing to plug it in. Even if you do forget to charge it, a rapid five-minute recharge delivers three hours of playback, a feature that saves you when you are rushing out the door. The inclusion of Bluetooth 5.3 with LE Audio ensures a stable, high-quality wireless stream, and the ability to connect to two devices simultaneously means you can switch effortlessly between your phone and laptop. For the person who needs a single pair of headphones to handle everything from late-night mixing sessions to early morning runs, this versatility is unmatched.

However, this product is not for everyone. Because it is a closed-back design focused on isolation, it does not offer the natural, airy soundstage of open-back models. You might find the bass-heavy tuning too overwhelming if you prefer a neutral, flat response for critical listening. Furthermore, the lack of a built-in headphone jack limits its use to wireless scenarios only, though the robust battery life mitigates this constraint. It is a heavy-lifter for daily wear, weighing in at 232 grams, but the rounded earpiece shape and lightweight build make it comfortable enough for extended sessions. If you prioritize features like voice control via Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri, and want a customizable EQ through the dedicated app, this is your tool. But if you are looking for the most accurate reproduction of a recording for professional mastering work, this consumer-focused headset will fall short.
The Audio-Technica ATH-R50X is a tool for the purist, built specifically for professionals and enthusiasts who demand absolute sonic truth. This is not a casual listener's headphone; it is a reference monitor designed for mixing, mastering, and creating music in a controlled environment. The defining characteristic here is the fully open-back design, which allows unrestricted airflow to eliminate internal resonance. This results in extremely quick transient response and a wide, realistic soundstage that mimics the experience of listening to speaker monitors rather than headphones. If you need to hear the subtle nuances of a vocal track or the precise placement of instruments in a mix, this design provides the clarity that closed-back cans simply cannot match.
Comfort plays a significant role in why this model endures in professional studios. Weighing only 207 grams, it is lighter than the JBL, and the new headband design ensures it stays comfortable for hours of continuous use. The velour earpads are replaceable, adding to the longevity of the unit, while the open cups keep your ears cool during long sessions. Unlike many modern wireless headphones that rely on batteries and digital processing, the R50X relies on pure analog performance. The driver moves directly, translating diaphragm movement into sound without digital compression or latency. This makes it ideal for producers who need zero latency and a direct signal path from their audio interface.
That said, these headphones come with strict limitations that disqualify them for many users. They are strictly wired, requiring a physical connection via the included detachable cables (available in 3.0 m and 1.2 m lengths). There is no Bluetooth, no battery, and no noise cancellation. In fact, because they are open-back, they offer zero isolation; sound leaks out loudly, and outside noise leaks in freely. This makes them terrible for commuting, working in a noisy coffee shop, or exercising. They are designed for the studio, the home office, or any private space where silence is guaranteed. If you are looking for the best hifi stereo bone conduction headphones for gym activities or multipoint bluetooth earbuds for gym use, this is absolutely not the answer. It is a serious piece of equipment for serious listening, not a lifestyle accessory.

In my opinion, the choice comes down to where you spend your time. If you are looking for a versatile pair of headphones that can follow you from the gym to the office without needing a cable, the JBL Tune 770NC is the clear winner. Its combination of active noise cancelling, massive battery life, and wireless convenience makes it the superior choice for everyday life. However, if your goal is to sit in a quiet room and analyze audio with surgical precision, nothing beats the Audio-Technica ATH-R50X. I would buy the JBL for general use because it solves real-world problems like noise and battery drain, whereas the Audio-Technica serves a very narrow, albeit critical, niche. For anyone needing the best hifi stereo bone conduction headphones for gym use or multipoint bluetooth earbuds for gym sessions, the JBL is the only logical path forward.
Only the JBL Tune 770NC is suitable for workouts. The Audio-Technica ATH-R50X is an open-back wired model that offers no isolation and cannot be used while moving around.
