Jazzercise: A Beginner’s Guide

Fun Beginners Dance Workout For Weight Loss - dance workout for beginners at home.

Some of my most popular posts are about my journey with Jazzercise, and some of my most frequently asked questions from friends and people online are about Jazzercise. Since I was also a beginner not too long ago, I thought about answering some of the questions I got, as well as some I asked when I started:

What should I wear?

Sorry to disappoint you, but the neon and spandex leotards came out in the 1980s. For your first Jazzerise class, wear whatever feels comfortable to you, but remember that you're going to jump and move, so you'll want something. that gives you flexibility and support. Personally, I wear short leggings (even in winter, because you really work until you break a sweat), sports bra, tank top, and sneakers. You will see a wide variety of clothes. Some people wear head-to-toe workout clothes, while others keep it ultra casual with a t-shirt and shorts.

I bring

Just water and you! Some people bring their own rugs and weights, or even an extra towel or pillow to place on the rugs that are provided. In my center, there are almost always enough rugs and a variety of weights to choose from. Although you use weights in all classes, rugs are not always necessary. You will occasionally use exercise balls and resistance bands, but they are also provided (and no prior experience is required).

Okay, so there are pesos. Why do I start?

If you're already familiar with weight training, you probably know what's best. But if you are a newbie like me, I started at 3 pounds and after a week I dropped to 5 pounds. Currently, I use weights between 5 and 6 pounds, depending on the class.

So are there different types of classes?

Yes! This is what helps keep you entertained and what helps keep your workout complete. Each class format is a different mix of songs / exercises, some are more focused on cardio (Dance Mixx) while others are more focused on strength (Strength 60). You can read more about the different types of classes here. And you can always find out what classes are happening and when to use the Jazzercise app or by searching for your hub on their website. For example, here are my center hours!

Is it really good exercise?

As with any exercise, you will only get what you invest in. However, in general, people (like me) are surprised to find out how challenging each class can be. Classes typically last an hour and are a good "one-stop-shop" for your daily exercise.

I don't know how to dance. That matters?

Anyone can do Jazzercise. I don't consider myself a dancer in the least, but that doesn't mean I don't have fun trying. Also, one of the many things I love about Jazzercise is that it helped me with my overall coordination. You'll learn that each routine is choreographed to work specifically with each song, so that you can feel (and hear) when you are about to change your movements. And if you count to eight, it will be easier to stay in line. However, none of this really matters - the environment is designed to make you comfortable, so you can do your job and make it your own workout. It is an area without prejudice.

Do you still dance to the music of the 80s?

Although I think a kind of kickback would be awesome, Jazzercise definitely keeps everything up to date with what's popular on the radio (my favorite routines are Bruno Mars). This means that we learn new routines quite frequently, so even if you're new to Jazzercise, the veteran next to you is likely learning something for the first time too.

I have an old wound. Can I still prove it?

Absolutely! While there are many jumps and lunges that can be difficult on the knees, instructors offer low-impact options for each exercise.

How many calories do you burn?

I use an Apple Watch and find that I burn approximately 450 to 550 calories per class. I discovered this blog, which has a good overview of the number of calories burned for each class format.

How do I start and how does everything work?

As soon as you sign up (you can pay per class or enroll for 3, 6 or 12 months), they print a little card with your name on it. Before each class, she takes out her card so they can scan it. This helps you keep track of the number of classes you attend in a year. They usually announce during class when you reach a milestone, such as 25, 50, 75, or 100 lessons. And with the new app, I think we'll see a transition to digitize your phone instead of the card, this is exciting! Jazzercise also announces great deals multiple times throughout the year, so stay tuned for a membership special, that's how I got hooked.
