Jay’s Green Team is a grassroots, community initiative led by Jay Magner in an effort to create greater awareness about the environmental issues facing Tampa Bay. Since March of 2015, Jay and a small group of committed friends have made the issue at the Davis Island Bridge their primary concern. The litter that washes up in this location, either from Tampa General Hospital or elsewhere, should be a concern to all those who live and visit this beautiful area of Tampa Bay. It is a disgrace that such a signature part of our city has this occurring right under our eyes. By meeting weekly on Saturdays at 1 PM for approximately 45 minutes, members of Jay’s Green Team pick up the litter from under Davis Island Bridge. Afterwards the group meets for a well-earned refreshment nearby. Through this activity, participants gain a greater awareness of the urgent call for our community and the world to take sustainable and environmental issues more seriously.

“A couple of years ago Jay, his partner Cole and myself would go bike riding every Sunday. Jay noticed how this little beach area across from TGH was filled with trash so we started to clean it up. It became a part of our weekend routine. We cleaned up that beach for a couple of years, and then Jay noticed an area closer to the hospital that was also filled with trash. It amazed me how much trash is thrown into the Tampa Bay. A part of me hoped that if we cleaned it up enough times that one day we would show up and there wouldn’t be any trash to clean and our mission would be accomplished. Unfortunately that is not the case. In order to be successful we need to educate the community and have their help in keeping Tampa clean. It’s about respecting the place in which you live and allowing future generations to enjoy this beautiful earth as much as we have. ”

“Since joining Jay’s Green Team in the spring of 2019, I have not only met a wonderful group of people but also increased my awareness of environmental and sustainable issues facing our community and the world at large. It is a modest thing that we do, but even after my first week, I could not look at a plastic straw the same way again. By simply being a member of this initiative and giving an hour of my time per week, I am more motivated to cut down on my own use of unnecessary products that harm our community and planet. I hope you will consider joining us. Our coffee and conversation afterwards is equally as fruitful and uplifting.”

Its been one of the best things and most uplifting things I do during my weekends. Its so great to get with a group of people who care about where they live and who want to put in the effort to keep Bayshore and Davis Island beautiful. We clean the small beach on both sides of the bridge for 30-75 minutes as a group of us, then we walk to the nearby coffee shop to socialize with each other and it’s a great way to spend Saturdays.
