About

Jaylynn Buchmelter began her composition career after premiering a jazz ensemble piece by Dave Morgan, which opened her ears to new sonic possibilities and made her ecstatic to try them out for herself. Ever-inspired by sources ranging from early 20th-century classical music to jazz to modern film and video game music, she weaves together elements from many styles to tell compelling musical narratives. Jaylynn has composed works for piano, chamber ensembles, voice, and fixed media. Her current focus is on the wind ensemble and the orchestra, and she has recently completed her first symphony for wind ensemble.

She has had works performed and recorded by ensembles such as Festoso Winds and the Stow Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, her work for fixed media, Shedding Skin, was featured in the SEAMUS festival at Ohio University in 2024. Jaylynn has studied with Dr. Stefan Swanson, Dr. Miguel Chuaqui, and Dr. Elisabet Curbelo-Gonzalez. She is currently pursuing her Master of Music degree in Composition at the University of Utah, where she studies with Dr. Jessica Rudman.
